Show CO 1980 Ogden band rekindles interest in concerts By DON BAKER 10 August Sunday Standard-Examin- er Staff There was a time when nearly every Utah community had its own brass or concert band It was a local tradition And during the Fourth of July or other special celebrations the community band was always there — often decked out in colorful uniforms — with a rousing repertoire of march tunes ballads and popular songs of the period Concerts in the park were a common thing in those days and band members spent countless volunteer hours rehearsing material That tradition has been all but forgotten in recent years Preserved in some small measure by local school bands the community band spirithas generally fallen by the wayside in an era where most people have become accustomed to hearing their music loud recorded and electronic But there is a renaissance of sorts taking 'place in Ogden a rebirth of interest in concert band music that has been kindled by a new community concert band It’s the “Ogden Wind Band” n performing under the baton of Melvin v' ‘‘XJ I Comprised of adult musicians from throughout the Ogden area the concert band was organized this summer and has already performed two community concerts The band will play again tonight during a free Sunday concert at 7:30 in Lester Park immediately behind the Golden Hours Center at 650 25th Its membership is varied There is a physician several housewives a plumber businessmen and professional people a florist a number of music teacher-san- d there’s also a seminary instructor But while they come from different lifestyles and background they’re united by a common tie “We all like to play” explained Edvalson “Our members have had good experiences studying their instruments and performing as students “But after acquiring those skills there has been no further opportunity for performing in a concert band setting” he added A rare opportunity arose last JMay when a Weber High School alumni band was formed for e a concert The alumni musicians not only enjoyed doing the concert but they realized they still wanted to experience the artistic joys of live one-tim- '’v J6'-- ' 3f si -- sC NfJWJ £8 I ' S’ $ 50-mem- Ed-valso- V A TOUCH OF BRASS — The wind band’s horn section the backbone of any concert band includes musicians “They expressed a desire to continue playing” said Edvalson14 an investment counselor who spent some years in the musical trenches as a secondary school band teacher Which is how the Ogden Wind Band was born Despite the name — a tradition that dates back to the 1800s when many concert bands styled themselves “wind bands” — the local musical group has the standard concert band instrumentation Brass and woodwind instruments are augmented with percussion instruments to achieve the traditional concert band sound And judging from the reactions of Ogden area residents to the initial performances of the Ogden Wind Band it’s a sound that is still popular and appreciated The band’s 1980 summer has been one of organization with only a handful of performances Two concerts were scheduled in Lester Park through the Ogden City Recreation Department’s summer “Concerts in the Park” series while a third was set at Weber State College Now two-thirof the way through the summer season Edvalson says the community response has been very encouraging and notes band members are looking forward to a busy ds like (left to right) James Starley Frank Ellis Byron Montgomery Darrell Lund and Lewis May schedule in coming months The band is currently developing a fall schedule and looking for sources of funding that will aid in the development of the professionalism and resources “We plan to feature our own members as soloists rather than bringing in talent from outside the area” said the conductor “And we are interested in developing the band into a professional concert organization” he explained Edvalson said he plans to schedule independent concerts this fall as well as arranging for joint performances with local high school band instructors “One of our goals is to have a positive musical effect on this area by showing students that adults are also interested in performing in concert bands” he said “We would like to serve as role models for serious band students as well as giving support and encouragement to existing school bands” Edvalson noted While the band has a “limited membership” because of size and instrumentation Ogden area musicians interested in joining the Ogden 2 Wind Band may contact Bill Ford at for information on membership and auditions 393-620- Timothy's Half Brother To Dick Van Patten By STEVEN H SCHEUER Is Timothy Van Patten related to Dick Van Patten?
