a ' SALT LAKE CITY — The waterfowl and the and trapping proclamations will be key items on the agenda of the Utah Wildlife Board meeting here Wednesday The session will start at 10 am in the board’s office at 1596 W North Temple The public is invited to attend The board is expected to consider changes in these proclamations and also review the proclamations for guides and the regulations for importing and exporting wildlife The 1980-8- 1 waterfowl proclamation will be published next Sunday and copies available to the public shortly fur-beare- rs 1980-8- 1 after E!k Do Well In Book Cliffs THOMPSON — Half a hundred elk 'transplanted to the Book Cliffsnorth of here last winter are appa-rently doing very well report state ! wildlife officials Jack Rensel supervisor and John Kimball game manager northen region Utah Division of Wildlife Resources recently toured the area on horseback The pair reported success of the transplant “looks good” They said it’s planned another 50 will be taken from the Hardware Ranch herd in Blacksmith Fork Canyon this winter and released in the Book Cliffs The choice big game animals were released on state and bureau of land management lands in the region where habitat conditions for elk were described as “fantastic” The wildlife division is attempting to establish elk herds in as many areas of the state as possible and the Book Cliffs have every indication of being one of the best said Officer Rensel FOUND DEAD One cow elk was found dead in the area and a preliminary exami- nation at the site indicated it had died of natural causes An autopsy is planned however in an effort to determine the exact cause There was evidence of an intestinal blockage The wapiti released in the Book Cliffs after being brought from Hardware Ranch were fitted with colored collars Ranchers in the area have been reporting sightings of the collared elk Bob Nielsen game manager in the northeastern region also made the ride and said the animals have scattered and all indications since they were released are that they are doing well Officer Rensel said other areas of public land in the state may be opened for the introduction of elk from Hardware Ranch The ranch area has one of the best elk herds in the state Over 600 animals wintered at the ranch in 1979 and 80 The area usually produces the best success for elk hunters each year Office Gets 4611 Big Game Applications SOUTH OGDEN — The northern region office of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources here received a total of 4611 applications for spe- cial permits to take big game Although applications were handled differently last year so no comparison can be made the count was believed to be as high or a bit higher than last year Applications were received for permits to take deer and elk in special hunts buffalo antelope moose and desert bighorn sheep The dealine was July 31Sale of regular rifle open bull elk permits ended Friday Archery bull elk permits however may be year 150 archery elk permittees who obtain their $30 permits before Aug 1 are randomly selected for special permits to take either bull or cow elk Archers after both deer and elk are expected to find extremely heavy foliage in all big game country which can be an advantage to hunters who know how to use cover to get at either of the two big game animals This is especially true if mountain country elk are in excellent condition this year and those spotted recently are fat as butter balls The fawn crop for deer and the calf crop for elk both look extra good this year also Preparation and
