Show 14B Standard-Examin- Sunday August 10 1980 er How Can People Scoff at Wild Flying Saucer Story? By IRIS SYNDERGAARD Last Tuesday I saw a flying saucer The round object with red and amber lights blinking around its perimeter wobbled around the Gfoothills awhile before it whooshed up and HMMWWWIS WA1 ' I away I People I talked to ab-- I out my saucer scoffed They said I was imagin- - ft: $ A Yet those ing things same people expect me to believe in things I for one don’t believe a word of it Then there are other men Petronella mentions who she says stand at each side of the gate of a huge fenced-i- n palace called Buckingham She says these men wear very tall furry hats with straps under their chin and they are not allowed to twitch so much as a muscle no matter how tourists may gape at them or giggle And why do they guard a place where if it really exists a person in their right mind wouldn’t want to eo anvway if what Petronel 18 Mount Vernons THE LITTLE WOMAN la tells me has anything to do with the truth? She says the great palace has many countless chilly rooms and that rather important people have been known to get lost for simply ages and no one the wiser Where do people who report such ridiculous things get off laughing at my flying saucer? I mean really! AT CURFEW — Have you heard about the tourist who went to Venice and hasn’t been heard from since?- - Seems he got into a street fight MOUNT VERNON NY — Fourth grade children here at Lincoln Elementary School learned about other towns with the same name as their own Mount Vernon They found 18 Mount Vernons in the US and wrote letters to all Sixteen responded with brochures photos souvenirs and personal let- ters The smallest was Mount Vernon Ark with 132 people The largest was the students’ own city with 77535 persons All but two of the children in the class said their own Mount Vernon was where they want to live “Now don’t say I never take you anyplace! ” which I personally have never seen and w ' V which sound a whole lot N sillier than my saucer ft " 1 Take my neighbor I Petronella who recently moved here from England To begin with I’m not even sure there IS an England Oh sure It’s on my globe of the world and shown in my atlas but I Ghave never seen the place for myself And frankly much of what Petronella tells me about Jolly Old England sounds pretty to say the least She tells about old stone buildings covered with ivy which house suits of armor which she claims were actually worn by knights of old -i S' j far-fetch- te i $ 15 as jetfsaljsjKa "0 "T 1 VC"-- ' ed 4'i'Hr ’ -- DAY BY DAY 1 V’srvv vA V - ' fil1 "74 fix who once they got inside the armor clanked NJ nj: - sw s 4 1 around stirring up trouble among the peasants and mounting horses to rush at each other with long lances held under one arm Well from pictures I’ve seen which claim to be of such men wearing iron armor and from the way the visors on the peaked iron hats are shown it seems certain that the visors would tend to slam shut over the knights’ eyes once the horses got underway If there really were knights in armor loping around with their visors shut wouldn’t they tend to ram into stone walls with their lances and wouldn’t they wreck havoc among spectators bowling them over left and right? Where is the sense in that? Even if there I guess really were knights in Jolly Old that should be “Olde” England always called “Sir Somebody-or-Other- ” and if they did take part in such tomfoolery why would anyone want to brag about it? There seems to be no sensible reason why anyone should want to get themselves into about a ton of metal so that they would have to be lowered onto their horses with a crane which would certainly cause the horse’s legs to buckle a lot v 7”® vv ' 4s ty - i ' SMS&SSSKS&&k!K V a'S v x 7 K if 0- - f 1 1 & 4t More Plants Grown in Homes STREAMWOOD 111 — With increasing numbers of plants being kept in homes the horticulture market continued to grow last year A survey found that more than 80 percent of US households grow plants Of the estimated 236 million planters bought in the US during 1979 more than half were plastic More than 53 percent of the respondents said they kept more plants in 1979 than during 1978 On average Americans kept a total of 21 planters in their homes up from 10 in 1975 Of those keeping plants 45 percent said they expect to keep even more in the future “Planterware continues to be a dynamic and growing market” Richard Husby marketing manager for Phillips Products said ‘‘Planterware is a decorating accessory not merely a container for a nint !
