Lee W. Farnsworth Current assistant majority leader in the Utah Legislature, Lee Farnsworth has been a representative for the past eight years. He said he believes his ex- perience last year as a foreign policy consultant to Sen. Orren Hatch gives him an added edge. My background in international trade, mainly in the Far East, can be an asset especially for trying to sell coal to Asia, Farnsworth said. The candidate said he would like to serve on the Energy Committee because the main fuel sources supplied by Utah have given him knowledge on energy. I want as little regulation as possible, he said. Farnsworth also wants to cut the size of federal government and backs a constitutional law that would require balancing of the budget. Howard C. Nielson For the last eight years Nielson has taken a front row seat to government affairs after serving from 1966-7- 4 in the Legislature. The last two years of his term were as House Speaker. Ive kept in touch with politics and I know the process, Nielson said. Boasting a wide and diversified education, with a masters degree in economics from the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, Nielson has worked nationally and as a business and economic consultant. I encourage the President to put some heat on (Paul) Volcker and the Federal Reserve Board, Nielson said. Hes keeping the interest rates up. He believes most of the fat in the budget is a result of cost overruns and too much federal hiring. I think weve got to take a hard look at our federal programs and keep federal government out of the states, he said. We can have a stronger defense with less money and better management. Nielson is looking to serve on the Interior or Energy Committees. He says his experience with the Bureau of Land Management and coal projects qualifies him for the positions. Les Titus The former legislative assistant and economic advisor to Sen. Orrin Hatch, combines youth and enthusiasm as well as knowledge of the economy. All the candidates know the problems, but nobody except me is giving any solutions, Titus said. As long as we have a floating currency were going to have problems, he said. Weve got to pursue a commodity-base- d currency to stabilize the economy. It can be a gold standard or an energy standard, just as long as we dont have to depend on the Federal Reserve Board. Titus is seeking a spot on the Government Operations Com- mittee where he would attempt to make agency heads accountable on a regular basis. Congress is spending so much time spending money that they dont have enough time to evaluate how well it has been spent, Titus said. He also is seeking to streamline the budget process. It would free a lot of time for Congressmen if we wouldnt waste so much time on the budget. Steve Densley Densley, owner of an insulation firm that has five offices statewide, is planning to use the experience he has gained in business and as an active Republican Party member. Theres a decisive difference in the candidates, he said. Im the only one that has to deal with payrolls every day. Densley said his business hoping her background with the party and in Latin American affairs will give her the nomination. She says that some of the problems can be solved through increased volunteerism. I agree that the hungry should be fed and the needy housed, but that can be achieved with a stronger state and local government and larger volunteer efforts, Valentine said. The 1981 Utah Mother of the Year, who spent nine years in Argentina as an office manager for E.I. Dupont Co., strives for a balanced budget, but does not think that deficits should be made up for by cutting the defense budget. We need a strong defense to maintain moral order in the world, she said. Im for equal rights, but Im against ERA, abortion and child abuse, Valentine said. I think by sending a woman to Congress Utah can look good and prove we dont need an equal rights amendment. Democratic Party attorney Scott Daniels asked that Judge Bryant H. Croft excuse Huish for making an honest mistake by failing to file his candidacy papers at Lt. Gov. David Monsons office by April 26. A decision is expected late this week. Huish, a former superintendent of U.S. Steels Geneva plant in Orem, said he was unaware of the exact election filing laws and tried to file by mail instead of in person. Its perfectly obvious that I intended to run all along, Huish said. Im not a professional politician so I wasnt aware of the precise laws. Huish completed a report and fee requirement needed by the Federal Elections Committee and was told that was all he needed to do. It was all he needed to do on that particular report, but the additional state report was forgotten. Assistant Attorney General Sharon Peacock headed the case for the defense. She argued that the deadlines for filing are clearly defined and to allow Huish a spot on the Democratic ballot could set an unfair precedent. SAVE Daniels claimed the law is meant to be interpreted liberally to encourage candidates to run rather than preventing them from running. Ms. Peacock also said that previous cases cited by Daniels where candidates were allowed on the ballot after deadlines were a result of a filing officers mistake. She said no special circumstances existed in the Huish case. In the meantime, Huish went ahead and filed as an Independent a as Party candidate precautionary measure so that he will be on the ballot. 20 to 30 on Lawn Mowers Sale ends June $AV 2 Hurry! lncluded-$AV- E RENT TO OWN! scheduled Play 19, 1962 rA Reg. 214.99, plus transportation, handling 3Va hp rear bagging mower with bag.
