Jody Goodrich, a senior at Carbon High School, had the opportunity last summer to do extensive research on growth regulators in plants and the effect of radiation at the University of Nebraska. As part of her science fair project last fall, she sent letters to 200 universities across the nation about seed respiration and radiation. One response came from Dr. Eric Davies, a biochemist in Nebraska. He invited Jody to come use his facilities to do spent 10 to 15 hours a day, six days a week, doing research. Jodys mother, Joanne Goodrich, said Dr. Davies was a great help to Jody, showing eradiated dry and imbibed (soaked) seeds and small seedlings, then ran tests to see what effect the radiation had on them. She also grew the seeds to study the polysome in the root system. She found the dry seeds were not affected and the imbibed seeds were affected a small amount. The seedlings were greatly affected. They didnt grow much and the polysomes in the root stems had changed, causing them to be very hard. Joanne said Jody appreci- ates the Carbon County School District for offering so many opportunities to stu- dents through the various fairs and the outstanding science teachers at Mont Har mon Junior High and Carbon High who encouraged her to her how to do some of the tests he had done and how to use the equipment. He allowed her to have the run of the facil- -' ity to do the testing and research she wanted to do. Using a cobalt source, Jody participate. Jody is taking a break from her science fair project for two months to work as a page for Senator Orin Hatch in Washington D.C. She learned about this opportunity while there three years ago during a history fair and put in an application with the senator. She attends school from 6 to 9:30 a.m., then works on the floor from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pages have to run errands for the senators and answer phones. They stay in a residence hall on Capitol HilL Jody is enjoying the opportunity and learning much about how the government works.
