Show Tuesday, October 9, 1990 Local mining firms rank high for safety Consolidation Coal Company ranked first in the nation among the 20 largest coal producers for safety. Three other owners of local mines ranked in the top 10. Utah Power & Light ranked fifth, Cyprus Minerals ranked sixth and Coastal States Energy ranked seventh. Exxon Corporation had the nations overall worst corporate mine safety record among the nations largest 20 underground coal producers, according to the Fifth Annual Safety Ranking published by the Occupational Safety and Health Law Center (OSHLC), a public interest law firm in Washington, D.C. Exxon operates two giant mines in Illinois through its subsidiary Monterey Coal Company. During 1989, 7.8 miners out of every 100 fulltime miners suffered an intermediate (fatal or serious") accident during the year. The numbers are staggering when you consider the resources that Exxon is capable of applying to the problem," according to J. Davitt McAteer, OSHLCs executive director. In addition in 1989, a mine disaster killed 10 miners in western Kentucky, making the Pyro Mining Company No. 9 Station Mine the single most dangerous mine for the year. "This is a highly profitable mine operated in an irresponsible manner by the large British construction firm, Costain Holding, PLC. The manner in which this mine was operated and continues to be operated today is alarming," McAteer reported. Costain ranked third worst for its overall corporate safety record, with 6.4 of every 100 workers being either killed or seriously injured during 1989. Slope-Willia- m Surveys released by OSHLC show that for the past three years (1987, 1988 and 1989) Exxon has ranked at or near the bottom of the list The lack of progress toward an improvement is a sign that the management ofExxon has simply disregarded the lives of the people who work in their mines and continues to recklessly pursue profits before people," said McAteer. Every major study has found that motivation at the highest levels of management is among the principle factors in achieving safety. Exxon management has failed to make the necessary commitment to mine safety. Much as it did after the Valdez disaster, Exxon has thumbed its corporate nose at the mines and their safety concerns," McAteer continued. The Pittston Company, baoed in Greenwich, Conn, and best known in 1989 for an strike which culminated in signing a contract with the United Mine Workers of America, had the nations second worst safety record, with an intermediate injury rate of 7 injuries per 100 workers. Pittston had two fatalities during the strike when nonunion miners unfamiliar with the mines were killed and an additional 88 th ( workers were seriously Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 7 A Women's agency now has office Methane search? Shell Mining Company of Houston ranked fourth worst, the same position it held in last years ranking. It is sad to note that its rate of deaths and serious injuries was up from last year. In 1988, 4.6 workers per 100 were killed or seriously injured, compared with 6 workers per 100 this year (including three fatalities). Henry Paul Kizei1, et al, whose president Henry Paul Kizer was involved in the scandal which sent former West Virginia Governor Arch Moore to prison, has the years fifth worst record, with a rate of 5.8 serious injuries per 100 commission for women and families on its feet and working in a functional manner after we pushed for the appropriations last year," said Governor Norman H.
