Ancient Greek and an mythology will come to life Monroe elementary as students taught by Maureen Andrus select their favorite mythological hero or heroine and present them to the class. The sixth graders have been stu-a- t dying the ancient myths in English classes and, having completed research papers, viewed films and videos, books and poetry, are now preparing their presentations, the teacher explained. Each student was asked to represent a favorite hero or heroine, or to create a god or goddess, developing the personality, endowing with good deeds and even a costume. Many students have selected such characters as Cyclops, Medussa, Venus or Apollo, said Mrs. Andrus. Several of the boys have grouped together and are making a video of Zeus fighting the warriors. Students are asked to dress as the mythological person they are discussing and to show pictures and give a verbal report. Most students have selected the heroic types, but a few are doing the gods of the underworld, she noted. Puppet shows following the stories are being prepared, with the students making their own puppets, writing scripts and making Pioneer Choir To Sing Next costumes. Members of the peer leadership team at Granger high will host an assembly dealing with substance abuse at 9 a.m. on May 23. The school choir at Pioneer elementary will present a spring concert in conjunction with a PTA meeting to be held at 7 p.m. on e May 22 in the schools room. The choir is under the direction of Kaye Anderson, with Dorothy Merrill as accompanist. Games for all ages and all skill levels will be offered, with prizes for everyone. Tickets priced at 25 cents each will be available during lunch hour Monday. Activities will include a moon walk. Inexpensive food items available for family dinner will include sloppy Friendship medley, No Charge for medley, Patriotic medley and humorous numbers, along with various duets, trios and sextets. The theme for the program is Making Music Fun and included will be a student band, using such terns as a washboard, spoons and loisemakers.
