Show Jazz Have A Problem Layden says the Jazz players are overpaid. When compared to you and me. that may be true. But thats like comparing apples and oranges. The Jazz has the NBAs lowest payroll. But its not the NBAs worst team. In rookie Karl Malone, one of the latest targets of a Layden tirade, the Jazz has a player the fans have really rallied around. The kid has produced and he is one of the reasons attendance is up this season. He's fun to watch. But he doesn't shoot free throws as well as Layden thinks he should. So in front of fans and press last week with a game still in progress, he gets dressed down. Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be basketball coaches. Especially if youve saddled them with the moniker Frank. Frank and coaching basketball just dont seem to go hand in hand, at least in this neck of the woods. I know Frank McGuire was one of the e great college basketball coaches, but our experiences with the two Franks weve had recently in Utah indicates that perhaps the gentlemen with that name tend to be just a too, well, frank. I was a great fan of BYUs Frank Arnold and never really minded his outspoken assessment of the way he perceived the program to be going. But his supporters were in the minority and out the door he went, with probably some justification.. BYU saved a bad situation by bringing in Ladell Andersen, a proven coach and popular and mature individual who was able to rally team and fans. all-tim- Will the Utah Jazz be as for- tunate with their problem, which frankly, seems to be Frank? In the past several months the Frank Layden has found himself succumbing to to the pressures of coaching and being perhaps just a little too frank on the air and in the print media. Just a few short months after being written up in Sports Illustrated as someone Utah fans were having a great love affair with, Layden finds himself on the other end of the popularity scale. once-popul- Many fans are downright disgruntled - and were so even before the latest uprising occurred between team captain and star player Adrian Dantley and Layden surfaced. Several weeks ago a sign bearing the message Trade Frank drew the mirth of many fans. The usually affable coach, however, wasnt laughing. that most radio remarks had In fact, he was so angry e of his to be censored. Like Arnold before him. Layden has been wont to criticise his players in the press. And like Arnold, he may pay the price. Unlike Arnold, he is offensive with the terms he uses to express his post-gam- opinions. Helping your child succeed by Betty Condie President, Utah Education Association Bob awoke m d When the middle of the night screaming in pain and holding his ear, I knew he had one of those acute ear infections. I was scared enough that night to take him to the hospital emergency room and get the druggist out of bed to fill a prescription, but I would have worried even more if I had realized that frequent ear infections can cause language deficiencies. Ear infections in children may cause temporary hearing loss that can affect language development. The worst part of the infection usually clears up in a week or so, but fluid may remain up to four months, say audiologists. These infections dont usually cause permanent damage, but children can miss out on hearing and language development during this crucial time. Medical studies show that 75 percent of children have at least one ear infection by age 3. Parents concerned about their kids language development can use these guidelines: At six months children should babble. At one year they should say more than mama and dada. By two years they should speak three-year-ol- d sentences or have a vocabulary of 50 words. At age 3 children should be able to name objects such as ball, crayon, cup and spoon. If your young children suffer frequent ear infections, have them routinely screened and pay close attention to their speech development. I think he has a right to discipline and do all of those other things that make a coach a coach. But I dont think a teams dirty laundry should constantly be aired in the press not that you can blame the press. The reporters really have no choice. Certainly there is a great deal of stress associated with any profession. Coaching ranks right up there with the worst of them. Youve got people whose success in life depends on boys (and young men) running around in shorts and ball into a hole tossing an thats just a little bit bigger than the ball. It's a tough way to make a living. But most of us choose our professions. so we have to deal with the stress they bring with them. Now there isnt anyone who hasnt, in a heated moment, said or done something that is regrettable. But when those incidents begin to outnumber the calm and happy times, its time to step back and take a close look at whats happening. Like Harry S. Truman said about his rather stress-fille- d job - if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Capability Handsome Walnut Grain Finish $395 3 Per Week This is best illustrated by a conversation that went on in the lobby after the show, between a local individual and their guest from New York : Salt Laker: "Whatdya think?" New Yorker: "Well . . ." Salt Laker: "Before you say more, you should know that none of the performers get paid; they all do it for free." "Oh! In that case, they did remarkably well." In other words like Frank Layden says. "We New Yorker: are who we are." To be completely fair, let me say that PVP knows its audience. If you've been to PVP and like it. youll probably like this one. too. The play provides a cute story, some nice scenes and a big helping of fine dialogue that gives plenty of laughs. But I kept asking myself about the connection between Joe and Bette Logan (played by Diane Englert). Joe wants to help get her lather out of prison because he is a decent guy. but I didn't see what there was for him to fall in love with.
