Show i 2 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, March 13 1986 Sports Pirates Rebound To Chase Titans From State Scene SALT LAKE. Cyprus high poked a few holes in the theory that beating a team three times in one season is a task. The Pirates sent fellow Region Three foe Olympus home from the state 4A tournament by handing the Titans a 0 setback in Tuesdays consolation round. enAfter the two teams played a pair of counters in league play, the outcome was a bit surprising. The Bucs were rebounding from a tough 3 loss to Davis in the tourney opener Thursday, while Olympus had suffered a 5 setback at the hands of Brighton, one of the favorites. Brighton nipped Davis by a point Tuesday to advance to the semi-finalCyprus will fight on with a test of Mountain View today (Thursday) at 1:30. The winner of that contest will play for consolation honors at 5 p.m. Saturday. Mountain View sent Cottonwood packing Monday, rallying from 10 points behind in the fourth period. For Olympus, a season that began with high expectations came to an end. The Titans had early success, but struggled down the stretch, had to survive a playoff to make the state field, and then lost 73-6- one-poi- 65-6- 69-5- pre-tourn- s. two straight. 60 Cyprus 73, Olympus The Titan frustrations were evident in the fourth period Tuesday, a near-braerupted after a foul k and on two occasions the Titans foiled their hopes with technical fouls. The two teams played on near even terms throughout the first half. Cyprus was spurred by the play of Sid Freeman, who was held down offensively against Davis, while Trent Wright fueled the early Oly attack. Cyprus earned a advantage. The Titans cut a basket off that advantage as Mark Smith heated up offensively in the second period, but the Bucs clung to a 3 edge. The Pirates began to pull away midway through the third quarter. A Gerry Sommer steal and bucket put the Bucs up by six at the 4 : 02 mark and when the dust settled, the Magna club owned a 5 edge going into the last eight minutes of the season for one of the clubs. That was when Pirate captain Tom Ahlquist went to work. He scored half of his game-hig24 points in that stanza, cashing in from the line on 10x12. That and the Titan technicals helped the Bucs stretch the lead after Oly had closed to within four at one point. It was perhaps Ahlquists best outing, but he had plentyof help. Freeman added 15 (5, 5x6) and Craig Sudbury and Freik Beij scored 10 each while Sommer contributed eight. Mitch Johnson paced the Titans with 17 points. Matt Barnes came on strong in the fourth period to finish with 15 and Smith scored 16. The Pirates were plagued with turnovers, but offset that by shooting a sizzling 62 percent and more than holding their own on the boards. It was a case of too many turnovers and a wild shot put up in the late going with a lead that spelled doom for the Region Three down Cyprus' Croig Sudbury (14) and Frlak Baij (35) battla for tha rebound against a much shortar Davis taam in first round 4A competition. The contest was close all the way, with neither team able to forge ahead by more than three points until Davis built a advantage in the late going. The Darts had their share of trouble with Cyprus seven-foote- r Freik Beij, who had perhaps his best game, but when the chips were down Davis went to its man Mike Davis who shot the Pirates out of the saddle. Taylor spent most of the second and third periods on the bench in foul trouble, but his nine points in the fourth period along with 8x9 from the line by Greg Willard in that quarter proved to be the difference. Cyprus played well in the contest. But, according to Coach Mark Wilson, not well enough. The Buc mentor expected to win. Both teams scored 17 points in the second, but in the third period the Pirates were able to pull ahead ' by a basket as Beij went inside for eight points. Cyprus extended its lead to four and maintained that une til about the mark when the Darts pulled within one on a three-poiplay and then took advantage of a couple of Buc misses to forge back in front. Cyprus had to start fouling as Davis spread the court. Davis hit 13 charity tosses in the fourth period, but missed six, and the Bucs cut the five-poilead to just a basket. Jon Rees, who was held scoreless in the fourth period, was the games top scorer with 21 points (8, 5x9). Willard and Taylor added 16 each for the Darts. Four Pirates were in double figures with Beij leading the way with 16 (8, 0x1). Gerry Sommer had 15, (6, 3x4) scoring seven in a stretch in the third period. Continued on next page.
