Volunteer mothers have assisted in preparing scenery, teaching songs and dance routines and helping children learn dialogue, said spokesman Marilyn Ruffner. Kids, The program is designed to teach children good health and safety rules, explained Mrs. Rigdon, with the first part of the presentation focusing on how children can be in charge of their own bodies and health, while the second section helps children become aware of the prevalence of substance abuse and teaches them to say no to drugs and alcohol. We feel the children need to learn how to take care of themselves and that the best way to learn is through music. The students are excited about the program and we hear them singing the songs as they pass through the school halls, she said. The program is open to the community. The cuddly toys are helping their young friends to Be Excited About Reading, the focus of the activity. A wide variety of activities have been planned as part of the reading incentive program. Bears of all ages and sizes will be a part of the various programs and teachers and students are becoming very beary too, said teacher Holly Rordame. Classrooms are decorated with bulletin boards and pictures of bears, all encouraging youngsters to read more and enjoy it. Stories about bears are being told and read, pictures are being drawn and creative writing efforts focus on bear friends and their adventures. Tomorrow (Friday) will feature a Teddy Bear parade as students bring their own special bear to school and every entry will receive a ribbon, said Mrs. Rordame. A bear movie is planned next Friday and real Teddy Bear picnic for early April, she said. Children can earn points for books read and book reports turned in. Prizes being awarded top readers in first grade include bear stickers, bear pencils, bear suckers, bear bear badges, bear bookmarks, suckers and bear certificates. Students and teachers will participate in a bear dress-u- p day next week, being encouraged to wear any clothing that features bears. Anyone not owning beary apparel will be offered bear ears or stickers to wear, she added. Everyone loves a teddy bear and we hope these activities will encourage the children to read more, to learn to enjoy reading as they make the acquaintance of the many bear friends found in books, she said.
