Show 6 THE GREEN SHEET Wednesday, July 24, D. Lee John This week, the time of a unique Mormon holiday, I tell about a book written by that marvelous LDS historian, Juanita Brooks. It is deep research into an early tragedy of this area, the Mountain Meadow Massacre. A day we look back upon with horror, anger, disbelief, resentment, or any one of many other emotions. But no matter what your reaction is, its there and wont . . . never has . . . gone away. Many people wished it would go away back in Sept. 7 to 11, 1857 . . . but it didnt. People for the next twenty years wished it would go away ... but it wouldnt. When John Doyle Lee was executed on March 23, 1877 for that massacre, people hoped that finally, the matter would be laid to rest ... but it wasnt. 1985 Re-examin- ed tent to the Mormons, was massacred. Records prove that Salt Lake leadership was aware of what was brewing down-soutYes, and records have long proven that, while Lee was one of the party, so were the Klingensmiths, Lewises, Lotts, h. Its hard to imagine anyone who cared about our pageant hadnt read the rules as they appeared many times in the Green Sheet prior to June 1, 1985, the last day to accept applications being June 3, 1985. As a committee we have been begging people in Murray to assist us, l e. hostesses, seeking out young women to seek the crown, people willing to do workshops, typing, solicitation, monies and just plain moral support. The last two years fewer have had the time, no more. Murray people all have enjoyed, but not cared enough to really get involved and be a participant. All the above costing monies to provide. We have gone outside out city to find people willing to serve. Our real support presently is through those families that have had young ladies benefit from our efforts. As a committee we dont even talk about the crown until we are in rehearsals. We speak of grace, poise, confidence, beauty of face and figure, of ones talent, knowledcge, friendship and a constant reminder that this is a scholarship pageant. These girls must qualify for some form of higher learning. self-wort- These girls must understand important things about their com Um munity, their country, know community, state, and national leaders. I might mention that Miss Utah 1982, Jean Bullock, was from North Dakota. I never heard of any letter to the editor. But I was very much aware that Utah young women became more honest, dedicated and committed. They got involved in their state workshops, they sought out opportunities to perform, they sought the best skilled teachers, andor artists to develop talents, speaking, walking, standing and they took advice on interview and evening gown presentation. They began to appreciate those who had always been there for them. They really got involved. Miss Utah receives $5,000 in scholarships. We gave this year $700. This is most worthwhile. Charlene Wells entered the Miss Utah Valley Pageant, won and then went on to win Miss Utah and Miss America. Why Utah Valley? She attended BYU. Today these people are still cheering an excited and supportive of this young lady. Our reigning queen spent two whole summers unselfishly bringing pleasure to us in Murray park, i.e. Lil Abner and Oklahoma, never receiving anything but applause and personal satisfaction. She knows Murray people and she is a fine and deserving young woman. Murray Arts Council is a sponsor and they are not in a position to pay remuneration for those who work so 9 A.M. Engery is one of the main keys to a successful show and never will it be higher than it is on opening night. If that night is a positive experience for the cast, it will carry over into other performances. If something horrible is going to happen, it could well happen on another night. My own experience last year in Annie when I left one of my costumes sitting at home in the living room and all but missed the scene where I had several lines didnt happen on opening night. On opening night my powers of concentration were razor sharp. It was after I settled into the role and felt comfortable with the situation that I messed up. Every performance is different in live stage. Thats what makes it so exciting, but those who purposely stay away on opening night quite possibly miss the show at its best. Producing a major musical is an ambitious undertaking that requires the efforts of many, many talented people. That shows opening night will be just the beginning of what the sponsors hope will be an eagerly-awaite- d annual tradition. Those who are most closely involved with both shows have already done their jobs. Theyve worked months to prepare for those moments. And the rest is up to us. Ill be there, will you? If you cant make opening night, then find another that fits your schedule. You wont find a more enjoyable way to spend an evening. In Murray, Cinderella will mark the musical theater debut on the new amphitheater stage located behind the county fairgrounds. The amphitheater might never have been constructed had It not been for the tireless efforts of the arts council which has produced five previous shows on makeshift stages in the park, dreaming of the day when a outdoor theater would be a reality. That song highlights the most exciting event associated with the stage opening night. Theres something special about exopening night - a perience that will never happen again. You can feel it as a member of the cast, crew and orchestra, a sponsor and - most assuredly as a patron. Which makes me wonder why people seem so reluctant to purchase d opening night tickets to shows. Even those at Pioneer Memorial Theatre. The reasoning is that they want to give the cast and crew an opportunity to work out the glitches, but any production that is going to be worth its salt is going to be polished and ready to go on opening night. Now if the rules are to be changed, it could and would be through people who each year support us. Murray Chamber of Commerce members dont just have Murray residents as employees. They have the best qualified people they can attract, bring people from throughout the state and country. We have a rule that an employee for any Murray business, after six months can participate in Miss Murray. If these rules are to be changed, they likewise must in writing make their wishes known. We will consider said request. The Miss Murray Pageant committee is committed to excellence. We desire to make this a good and positive affair for all young women who choose to participate and we encourage them to repeat. If nob our snow other are available through our county. This is a great community and I want to add not take away, as does each committee member. Each of us resents the implication that one girl was favored over another. But it wasnt to be. Too many diaries, memories, ledgers, journals, and whispered secrets from one generation to another persisted. The Lee family was ostracized in hopes of erasing traces of that event, but it would not be buried. Quietly, on April 21, 1961, leaders of the LDS Church deemed it wise and fair for Lee to be with full authority, and on May 8 and 9, the necessary ordinances were performed in the Temple. With this act, John D. Lee, long the scapegoat of that Massacre, was once more a full member, exonerated (forgiven?) for his acts. It was a long struggle for both the Lee family and the church. Yet, July 5th to Aug. Haights, Batemans, Higbees, McMurdys and others.
