It would probably be of benefit to review the tape of the meeting, Gary Swensen added. Their comments referred to the leasepur-chas- e specifics of a five-yeagreement for 92 computer terminals, 23 control units and 23 printers to equip all secondary schools in the district with computer systems. The systems, capable of handling - district-wid- e an estimated ject. Payments would be distributed over 60 months installment basis providing full ownership of the equipment to the district with the final payment. The five-yecontract works out to $4,786.50 per month for the equipment, with an additional $2,849 per month for a maintenance agreement to keep the equipment functional. The total projected cost of $458,130 would draw $287,190 from the capital outlay budget and about $170,940 from the maintenance and operations budget over the five year period. A line item in the recently-passe- d district budget had earmarked $68,000 for the computer project, but that had projected only one years installment payment. The half million dollar total was apparently a bit much for the board to swallow. I didnt feel the boards discussion went quite that far - or committed that many funds, Mrs. Farnsworth noted, and I didnt understand wed have a terminal on every counselor's desk. I want to be supportive of this project, J. Dale Christensen added, and think if we can find a way to do it, we probably should. But I have mixed emotions about it. The hidden costs can creep up on us and eat us alive, Lynn Davidson noted, pointing out a substantial portion of the projected costs would be for maintenance. In order to make a decision, we need to know the end from the beginning. Seven companies had presented nine bids for the project, the highest data transfers, carry price tag totaling $458,130. The project was first proposed in a meeting of the board March 5 when a project to computerize ad- - Magna Council Continued from page 1 The site has long been a concern of residents and school officials because of the isolation created by a thick eight-fohigh hedge that surrounds the property. The board, however, remained confused on the issue. I feel uncomfortable about it, and Im not even sure why, Dr. Christensen said. With the uncomfortable feeling of the board, it was decided to postpone a decision on the matter until the board meets again Aug. 6 to give board members time to review the proposal. While purchase of the computer equipment was postponed, other purchases approved last week, included: $68,880 for lawn sod for improvements at Academy Park elementary, Brockbank junior high and Kearns high schools; to fence Westbrook $5,912.90 elementary; $11,560 for 40 video recorder-player- s for Jim Bridger, Hunter, Pleasant Green, Valley Crest and Westbrook elementaries and Hunter junior high school; $15,560 for 40 color televisions sets for those same schools; and $21,973 to print the districts totalling $640,387 and the low bid coming in at $330,935. Two of the bids were rejected because they did not meet district specifications. The offer included equipment that is not coaxially connected as director of purchasing specified, Robert Hummel explained about his offices recommendation to reject the low bid. Im in the unique position of having submitted the lowest bid, but not the recommended one, a representative of Beehive International told the board. His company submitted two bids -one for $538,802 meeting district specifications and a second bid for $330,935 which he claimed would meet the districts needs without the expenses involved in coaxial cables and other items. We felt the district needed to see the price, he explain- 1 Kelvin Kojimoto, Owner 8am-6p- Sat 8am-4p- m |
