There was which featured Disease Island, Lake and Mumps a Gary Galaxy d a creature called a Pteranobon, plus many other rare places. Students were required to write about their maps, after discussing the many types of information that can be found on a map. Their efforts described the landscape, kinds of creatures living on their make-believ- e place and the kinds of things they would do in that type of environment. Wishing to find out if the students really had learned what maps are all about, they were then given an assignment to make a map as homework. They were told to think of an unusual way in which to make a map of any place, real or imaginary. The map could be made in" any way they desired, except it could not be simply drawn on paper, the teacher said. There is a map drawn on a balloon, on melted wax and on cardboard. A United States map has plains made of cornflakes, mountains of Cheerios and capital cities of Trix.. There are maps created on KEARNS. Balloons, cereal, cardboard, cookies, even a soda pop can have been turned into maps during a map reading unit at South Kearns elementary. The project began when Nadine Stupelli and her fifth graders started discussions on different types of maps and the elements a good, useful map must contain, such as legend, scale and means of identification. Students have done many exercises to make sure they learned and understood how to read a map and to find information by using a map the teacher explained. The class made maps of the classroom, of students homes and other familiar places. Mrs. Stupelli is involved in the Granite district literacy cycle and a creative thinking workship and decided to incorporate some of the skills and techniques used in those areas into the map unit. A map was created using the students names and, in discussion, students discovered the map was real, even if the place wasnt. Students were then invited to create maps of something. All were imaginary and the results in 26-fo- wing-sprea- CLASSIC HAIR DESIGN R9 ULTRA PERM $4S WEST VALLEY VIEW cookies, cakes and pancakes.
