In addition to offering students the amount of practice needed for mastery of skills, the teacher is provided with immediate feedback as to who is learning and who needs more help. Mistakes are caught and corrected at once, before error patterns can develop, he observed. Direct instruction materials are scripted, Hanneman noted. This means that what teachers and students say and do is written out, making it possible for the teacher to spend most of the time interacting with students and teaching critical academic skills. Teachers need not spend time writing lesson plans and behavioral objectives, he said. The program works, the teacher h observed, enabling even students to acquire skills necessary for success in school and in later life. It also makes it possible for the student to enjoy learning. As students succeed academically, they develop more positive attitudes about learning, about their teachers and about themselves," Mr. Hanneman concluded. An extension of the County Attorneys office has been established as the main contact for south' Salt Lake Valley area legal needs. Known as the South Valley Unit, the new facility is located at 3839 So. West Temple. A spokesman said it offers citizens and small businesses, south of 45th South to the county line and west to Magna, quality legal representation and consultation, with the convenience of central location. Unit Chief Greg Bown said the unit is needed in the south valley because that is where the bulk of the Sheriff Departments misdemeanor cases are. The unit should benefit taxpayers as well as victims of crimes, according to Bown who said now everyone involved in a crime can meet at one site. Before, he said, considerable time and cost were required to gather all the necessary trial information from victims, courts and attorneys across the valley. Major felonies such as sex and abuse offenses, fraud and homicide cases will still be handled by the main downtown County Attorneys Office and courts while the new unit will take misdemeanors, and common felonies such as burglaries. The unit also offers a program to collect restitution for bad checks of $300 or less. The South Valley Unit represents precincts and courts of Murray, West Valley, Sandy, Magna, Draper, Midvale, West and South Jordan, Holladay, Kearns and South Salt Lake. R-l-- 51-l- 8 58-l- ot Fencing Course Begins Tuesday TAYLORSVILLE. Elementary fencing will be taught through the school of continuing education at Utah Technical College during spring quarter. Alex Stecker will be the instructor. Fencing is an exotic sport which provides many practical body conditioning results, with physical benefits including cardiovascular and muscle stretching advantages, he said. Mental effort is also required since the fencer must plan strategy and concentrate. Fencing is mentally tiring, he observed. Some modeling schools require fencing since it eliminates round shoulders and results in participants acquiring poise and grace, he noted. Stecker, who is the librarian at the college, learned fencing while a student at BYU. He studied with fencing masters in Zurich, Switzerland and in Vienna, Austria while attending universities in Europe and holds state and region titles in fencing in the WAC conference. He has taught fencing at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington and at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. Fencing has never really been in, but it is a sport of pure form and pleasure. Not only will it teach bending and movement, but it will also help students to better enjoy Errol Flynn movies, he remarked. Classes will begin on March 27 and be taught on Tuesday and Thursdays until early June. A $45 fee for the coeducational class includes use of fencing equipment. Thousands of farmers could profit from a process developed by engineers that say they can economically transform an ordinary car or truck vehiengine into an alcohol-burnincle. Converted engines, which have so far driven on fuel derived from corn, carrots, peaches, sugar cane and grain, could save money for farmers who currently .must pay high fuel bills to run the engines that drive the pumps that irrigate their fields. g |
