Show Project Launched Long-Ter- m Ceramic Tile Mural Will Grace Cafeteria Wall At EJHS TAYLORSVILLE. Art students at Eisenhower junior high are working on the first phase of a ceramic tile mural which, when completed, will measure 5x100 feet. We figure the project will take from eight to 10 years to complete and plan to finish a 5x10 foot section each year, said teacher John Fack-rel- l. By next year, it will be the largest mural in Utah and will eventually be one of the largest of its type in the world, he said. The mural will be made of ceramic tiles (terra cotta) shipped from California. Mr. Fackrell received instruction in the process from Gueillermo (Bill) Granizo, in a technique he developed and is, in turn, teaching his students the method. A contest was held at Eisenhower, open to students and faculty, for a design incorporating events in the school and community during the 1983-8school year. More than 300 entries were received, the teacher said, and 15 winners were selected. The weather played a large part in how many entries were conceived, he observed. The design for this years section will include a somewhat hazy sky, snowflakes, a school bus loaded with skis, students pushing a car off a snow bank, water, students in a canoe floating down State Street. Also, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, in uniform, as a central figure, with students in basketball and track action, a dancer and even an Izod alligator. The design is first drawn on paper, then transferred to the assembled tile. Each line must then be gone over using iron oxide with a wax resist, thus making the lines perma nent and ensuring that the glaze, when applied, will not run over the lines of the design, the teacher explained. Students next put glaze in squeeze bottles and use them to paint the design, which must then be allowed to dry before being placed in the kiln, heated to 1,450 degrees and baked for about five hours. The kiln will lake only 10 tiles at one time, said Mr. Fackrell. There are 150 in the section, so firing is expected to take two weeks. When finished, the tiles will be reassembled on the wall above the colors themselves, directed by a teacher, to intensify them and the finished colors will be very bright, he noted. Between 20 and 30 students will be working on the project, with representatives from all three grades. The students are doing the entire project themselves, with myself as overseer and adviser. Its a great project for them, the teacher commented. Top winners in the design contests were Jonathan Morris, Jeff Shaun Stauffer and Mike Lindsay. The design also incorporates ideas from faculty members Mike Furness and Kayleen Pugh, plus students Greg Pearson, Carla Pitcher, Shane Kirk, Tony Martinez, area in the schools cafeteria, he said, and additional sections will be added each year.
