Now there is a pilot program that will give home instruction to less seriously ill students. The homebound short-terprogram, new this year, is under direction of Vondella Savage, coordinator of home and hospital instruction. It is being tested at Granite high, Granite Park junior high and six elementary schools, including Hill View, Lincoln, Millcreek, Moss, Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. This is how it works: Johnny is absent from school this morning. He receives a call from a school staff member to determine how long his illness is expected to last. If he will be absent for more than five days, but less than 15 days, he is eligible for the program. His physcian is then contacted to establish that the illness is not infectious or contagious. He must average two hours of home study per week, but will not exceed three hours. Teachers in the program will be reimbursed at their regular hourly rate, plus mileage to and from the students home. Records will be maintained about Johnnys instruction so that a study can help decide if the program is beneficial. Should Johnny be absent for more than 15 days, he will be referred to the regular program. d At that time, the districts 10 teachers will take over, Mrs. Savage explained. If Johnny were a high school student in the long-terhome program he might learn advanced math, chemistry, physics and computer science from LaWana Merrill, who now has the use of a portable computer. It fits into two suitcases for carrying to home and hospitals. Mrs. Merrill finds it rewarding to basis.
