While millions of people around the world monitor radios this week in hope of picking up transmissions from the space shuttle Columbia, David Pedersen hopes to be one of the relatively few talking back. Space shuttle astronaut Owen Garriott caused a stir among ham radio operators like Pedersen last spring when he announced he would be taking a radio into space which communicawould allow two-wa- y tions between a spacecraft and citizens on earth for the first time. Its a new frontier; something thats never been done before, said Pedersen explaining the excitement among radio owners about the event. Weve always known it was theoretically possible, but this will be proof of the concept. Pedersen said there are more than one million ham radio operators around the world, including about 50 in the Salt Lake area, so those lucky enough to complete a successful transmission will not have time for a long conversation. Hes (Dr. Garriott) going to have to keep communication to a minimum, Pedersen said.
