Show Thursday, Dec. WEST VALLEY VIEW 2 1, 1983 Takes Underdog Team To State 3A Title Frank L'Etoile Captures Green Sheet Coach Of Year Honor tonwood team to a record this fall after an season a year ago. But it would be hard to justify not giving the award to the Bulldog mentor. Each year the staff renews its vow to give the award to the coach who has gotten the most out of his talent, meaning that the honor may not necessarily go to the coach whose team posts the most outstanding record. Certainly a state championship out of a team picked to finish third in its region is getting the most out of the talent. LEtoile will be the first to admit that his was a team without stars, unlike the 12-- 1981 Bulldogs who were supposed to win the title and did. But what Judge had was a gaggle of good football players with SALT LAKE Winning his third Green Sheet Coach of the Year award in eight football seasons is Judge Memorials Frank LEtoile. LEtoile, with an eight-yea- r record of is a strong candidate every season. This years Bulldogs posted the second worst won-los- s record of L'Etoiles career, but the team came together when it counted and won the 3A state title for the second time in three years. Strong consideration was also given to Coach Louie Long at Olympus, last years winner, whose team record, losing only to posted an 4A state champ Alta. Another making a strong bid for the honor was Tom Jones who guided his Cot- - 5 9 68-2- 11-- 1 Y heart. It was that heart that was able 7 come-from-beh- factor for both teams. Judge had 4 in the title humiliated Jordan game in 81, but Judge wasnt feeling too good about the pasting setearlier in the year and a back in 82. LEtoile had his team perfectly prepared. It evidently didnt know anything about being an underdog. Judge was more concerned with tradition. Paul Barbiero returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and the Bulldogs were rolling. Jordan scored with 15 seconds left to make the score close and the Beetdiggers won the battle of statistics, but the Bulldogs owned the gold trophy. LEtoile works his teams hard. In the overtime victory over Murray, only 13 players saw action. They were the best 13 we had, he said. Later, injuries healed and some younger players came along, but if called upon, the dirty 13 were ready to do it all. Judge has sent players to such places as Notre Dame (Pete Rokich), Yale (Mike Curtin) and Maryland ,( Kenny Vierra) during LEtoiles tenure, as well as Utah and Utah State. For awhile, the Aggies seemed to have a pipeline to the Bulldog campus. Obviously there is skill, but sometimes, coaches are looking for mted 9-- to overcome a three-gam- e slide and the team continued to build momentum throughout the playoffs until it upset previously unbeaten Jordan for thecrowm. Judge started off strong, beating o Roy, but lost to a Bingham team before posting three straight victories, over East and Tooele by lopsided margins, then needing an overtime to subdue Murray. A 34-- loss to that same Jordan team started Judge on the now skid. It was famous three-gam- e e loss to followed by a Skyline and then the shocker of all, a 2 defeat at the hands of winless South. South went on to win two more games, including one over previously undefeated Spnngville in the state playoffs, but for Judge, the season had reached a low point. We didnt have very many admits friends at that point, LEtoile The media had written us off and our fans were grumbling. The Bulldogs reached down deep within themselves for the dedication to salvage the season. It didnt hurt that some injured players recovered sufficiently to participate in the stretch drive. The comeback was launched with a gritty defensive effort against a solid West team. Judge escaped with a victory, but it was an important one. A loss would have meant fourth place in the region and thats a tough playoff draw. A furious second half rally fell just a point short here Tuesday night as Skyline escaped with a victory over a nervous Taylorsville quintet. Coach Dan Leatherwood was encouraged by the second half play of his team which was outscored in the first two periods, but turned the tables to outplay their highly touted hosts in the second half. It didnt help the Warrior cause when frontcourt stalwart Troy Almond went down with a sprained ankle on the games first play. Almonds status for a contest tomorrow (Friday) with Murray was uncertain. The Warriors will host the Spartans in a 7:30 p m. contest and on Tuesday will travel to South fora 3p m. game.
