They include, kindergarten, Beth Bailey, first place; Tara Tatton, second, Chris Schaerer, third; Tracy Rogan and Robby Nixon, honorable mention. First grade winners were Jennette LeSeur, first; Marcus Peterson, second, Aaron Larson, third; Tori Torgensen and Adam Larson, honorable mention. Second graders include Lou Phung, first; Michael Lewis, second; Luke Taylor, third; Jared Prazen and Sage Erekson, honorable mention. Chet Mauchley took first place in third grade, with Jeffrey Young, second; Stephanie Maughan, third; Barbara Beers and Melissa Engle, honorable mention. Cody Lynn Clayson won first place in the fourth grade, with David Blanco second, Heather Powers, third, Lynette Larson and Micky Olsen honorable mention. The retiring teacher has been involved in civic activities over the years, on an Eagle Scout board of review and has worked extensively with the scouting program. He is a member of the Utah Nature Society, has taught priesthood and Sunday school classes. When he was younger he had his own radio program, singing on KOAL in Price He has won several awards for singing and still offers his talent at funerals and I still sing in the bathtub, he smiled He has taught for the National Audubon Society at both Donners Summit and in Wyoming on the subHe was a ject of Ornithology botanist with the Colorado River expedition that made a survey to study plants and animals in the area Glen Canyon of the Dam As his teaching era comes to a close, Mr. Higgins plans to continue his research m mites and as long as my money holds out, I plan to do some traveling Teaching has been very rewarding, he stated, especially when his students have wanted to learn. Science instructor Harold G. Higgins, who has taught at Granger high since it began, was designated for teacher of the year honor by the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He plans to retire in June. Prior to that time, Mr. Higgins spent 10 years as instructor at Brockbank junior high and Cyprus high, a total of 35 years as a teacher in Granite School District. The Oak City native attended Carbon high, Carbon and Dixie colleges and earned a bachelors and masters degrees, as well as returning to get a teachers certificate from the UofU. He also has attended classes in Maryland, USU and Colorado State Recently Mr Higgins was presented the Meritorious Teaching Award by the Fraternal Order of the Eagles here His efforts in that field have been varied He remembers his first Granger high. days at the then-neThe first week, the students sat on the floor because we didnt have any chairs yet.
