Show In Rubber Match - Murray Ousted By Revived Jordan OGDEN. Murray finished out of the running in the state 3A tournament by virtue of dropping its rubber match Friday with Jordan. After splitting their first two encounters in league play, the Beetdig-ger- s jumped out to a big early lead against the Spartans, held off a late challenge and pulled away for a 2 victory. That left Coach Mike Evanss club with one victory in three outings at the state meet. While that doesnt sound impressive, it wasnt at all bad for a club which wasnt rated highly at the beginning of the season. Thats the message Evans gave loss his club after the season-endin- g 74-6- He was virtually unstoppable in the rout of Spanish Fork. Hitting 11 of 17 attempts from the field, Chapman finished with 28 points, clearly taking up the slack when Fraziers offensive contributions were greatly diminished because of the ankle injury. The Spartans also got good point production from the guard line against the Dons, with both Mike Simpson and Blake Soffe hitting double figures. Simpson finished with 11 points to go along with five steals and an equal number of assists. Soffe added 10 and played a solid floor game. Murray also got eight points off the bench from Carl Durfey and six to Jordan. Overall, the Spartans finished the 1 season with an record, inin a mark Region Six cluding play. At one point, they were After a club loses in the state tournament, as Murray did on opening day to Timpview, its often difficult to come back. The thought of winning the consolation championship just doesnt have that much pizzazz. Murrays second game of the tournament didnt reflect that attitude. The Spartans blew Spanish Fork out of the gym, running away to a 5 win. They did so largely without the services of leading scorer Dan Frazier, who injured an ankle dure warmups. ing Frazier was hobbled, particularly on defense, against Jordan but was nonetheless an offensive force that the Beetdiggers couldnt contain, scoring 25 points. d Thats one of the best efforts Ive ever seen, Evans said of Fraziers play against Jordan. It was a courageous effort. While he played second fiddle to Frazier in the scoring column, the Jordan game represented the completion of a highly impressive tournament for junior Keith Chapman. Chapman, whom Evans admits has more ability than sometimes is apparent in Murrays style of offense, had 17 points against the giving him a total of 57 in three games.
