Nationally syndicated columnist Anderson pauses for a moment after breakfast in Salt Lakes Marriott Hotel to chat with GRANDPA Holladay at 2173 Fardown Ave. (5910 South) to the newspaper office at 155 Court Ave. Anderson was actually born in Long Beach, Calif., where his father Orlando worked as a postal clerk. The whole family, including his mother, Agnes, and two younger brothers, Warren and Gordon, lived at 2160 Richards St. in Salt Lake before moving to Fardown Avenue. The Murray Eagle files show that Andersons first bylines were given him on April 15, 1937. The paper then introduced Andersons Irving School Items and Cottonwood Column. The news from Irving junior high lasted until Andersons ninth grade graduation the following June. He continued his news from Cottonwood for several months and a close look at it shows Anderson developing his wry sense of humor. A few months after being discharged, Anderson headed for Washington to look for a news job. Hed heard about Drew Pearson and applied for a job with him. He was among some 100 applicants for the job, but fit the bill as someone young and experienced. From then on he was Pearsons right hand man. The ban was approved and passed on Nov. 15 by all three members of the County Commission and states that it shall be unlawful for any person to possess or consume beer or other alcoholic beverages upon the premises of Evergreen, Magna-Coppand Big Cottonwood-Creek-sid- e parks. However, the ordinance goes on to say that beer and other alcoholic beverages may be possessed and consumed in those parks upon receipt of a permit from the County Sheriff, which shall state the time and place of consumption and shall be retained on park premises and displayed to any requesting person during all times beer or other alcoholic beverages are consumed. Canyon speed limits be increased to 40 miles per hour (from the present 30) because the latter figure is unrealistic and almost universally ignored. Creation of park and ride areas and 6200 South to reduce near the number of automobiles using canyon roads. Major realignments or additional lanes (other than runaway truck lanes) should not be constructed since they would degrade the rural character of the canyons, the report said. - Law Enforcement: A countywide tax to pay for increased law enforcement caused by increased canyon use. Since people throughout Salt Lake Valley benefit in several ways from the canyons, a countywide tax to provide funding for these needed services can be justified, it stated. - Water Quality and Supply : A definitive measure of water quality for each canyon stream to serve as the basis for future development. At age 12, he was just a skinny kid who pedaled his bicycle to newsworthy locations with a notebook in his pocket and a pencil tightly wedged between ear and crew cut. He - Jack Northman Anderson -learned the basics of news reporting as a staff member of the Murray Eagle in the mid 1930s. Today, at age 60, his syndicated column d and Washington various other reporting jobs earn him an international reputation. Anderson gave some background on his early years during a breakfast interview in Salt Lakes Marriott Hotel Thursday. One of his most vivid recollections of working at the Murray Eagle is of a photographer named Gooch. Gooch, Anderson said, was so short that I had to lift him over my shoulders so he could take pictures at town meetings. Gooch was a kid who had learned from the school of hard knocks, according to Anderson. He taught me a lot, he said. As a cub reporter, Anderson earned $7 a week - not a sum to get excited about, he said, even in those days. Back then, the paper was edited and published by C. B. Wallace. But the low rate of pay didnt lessen Andersons enthusiasm. He wrote about everything from tax reports to Murray City Commission meetings. He even covered fires. Anderson said he would usually be the last to get to a fire, because he had to pedal all the way. But, he added, I always made it there before the fire went out. Andersons pedaling started early in the morning as a Murray Eagle reporter.
