Drawn originally from the ranks of the unemployed, S. S. members were supposed to epitomize the master race - tall, blond, blueeyed men with no fillings in their teeth. Their first goal was to eliminate unemployment in Germany, a condition which the Nazis attributed to the harsh stipulations of the Versailles Treaty. With spring flooding imminent, the County Sheriffs Department has started identifying water hazard areas in the county. Crews of the County Sheriffs Search and Rescue Patrol will check potential problem areas and attempt to make owners repair winter damage to alleviate potentially dangerous situations, said Sheriff N. D. (Pete) Hayward. Water problems are expected to be much greater than usual this spring. The Jordan River has been at spring level all winter. Because so much water already is present in Utah Lake, County Flood Control officials authorized the early opening of canal systems. And the water table is high as well, Hayward added. To cope with the situation, the search and rescue patrol has purchased an additional portable rescue griding system for streams. Eight rescue divers also are on call, he noted. The team will respond to all miss ) ing children calls in unincorporated areas where water hazards exist. It also is available to municipalities requiring help, stressed Lt. Mike Wilkinson of the departments special services division, which oversees search and rescue. Despite these advance precautionary measures, Lt. Wilkinson fears it will be a busy spring. He noted that in a helicopter flight over the valley on Thursday, he and other officials were able to pinpoint ponds which had never existed before. Even though most are no more than a foot or two deep, thats more than enough water to result in the drowning of a small child who has wandered away from a home in a nearby subdivision, he said. And, Lt. Wilkinson added, Hie banks of the Jordan River cannot t o distinguished south of about 5ooo South. People with information on potential water hazards are being asked to call the patrol. 535-744- |
