Was last years ?A state championship game really played in the I lino gymnasium on February 15 or was it played later in tl e month when Pine Mew beat Wasatch for the "official" championship at I'tah Valiev State Col lege? Obviously that question will never be totally answered, but that 47-4- 5 controversial win by Pine Mew on a last second shot by what eventually became the state MVP will always haunt those that saw it. Carbon, not a very tall team to begin with, will even have to hustle harder now that Hopes will not be playing. But that doesn't mean they still can't go all the way- - in fact they are loaded when it comes to players with great defensive prowess and some offensive moves that usually bowi the competition over. It would be hard to say that there is one person that is the heart of this team, even though two all staters return from last year. That is what makes them so hard to beat; ev eryone from the last person on the bench to the leading scorer plays like there is no tomorrow. This year there will be three Warburton's on the roster, Cassie, a senior, Chelsey: a junior and newcomer to Carbon, Morgan who is a 14 year old freshman. While Morgan is on the sophomore team, the preseason has proved she can play on the varsity regularly and well. As for the other two, many boys teams in the state would do well to have them playing for them. Cassie Warburton is a hard nosed competitor who seems to get into all kinds of postions to score and does. She is one of the all staters. The other, sister Chelsey is not only a top flight scorer, but a defensive menace as was proven by two games in the preseason where she had 16 and 12 steals, and scores averaging over twe dozen points in each of those contests. As for height and power, there is Stephanie Cox and Brittanie Pollastro. Both are capable inside R. players who are capable of double figures in scoring and rebounding Specialist in Orthodontics in every game. 191 East 100 North, Price, UT &4501 Danielle Julian is the epitome of a small forward, moving around 637-032- 0 Tel: constantly and confusing the opposition, taking opportune shots and world e all handling the ball adeptly when the girls on the Carbon team to show they deserved the crown last year by winning it this year. Hie list goes on and on, but in the final analysis, this is a team that is molded alike and plays like a well oiled machine. Sometimes the coach changes the cogs in the mechanism, but it never seems to slowdown. Carbon should be the toast of the league this year, by far, but teams like Emery and North Sanpete wont be far behind. And neither will be a possible rematch with Pine View at state. |
