Show DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER,' AUGUST 25, 1982 SOUTH DAVIS a6 VERTISER, AUGUST 26, 1982 BOUNTIFUL io running backs Senior Bruce Talbot is slated to start at the tailback spot with juniorChris West right on his tail. "Bruce is one of the best tailbacks weve had at the school and West isnt far behind him," beamed the coach. At 5 10 and 160 lbs., Bruce is also one of the fastest backs in the area. Senior Mike Lee has been moved from offensive center to take over the fullback spot. At 62 and 185 lbs. Mike has the size to run over people. Moving him wasnt a reflection on our other fullbacks, noted Peterson, but rather hes too good to play center. We clocked him in 4.7 in the 40 yard dash and he has great hands. We just felt it would be a waste of talent to play him on the line, he added. Seniors Steve Luddington and Rick Balderston are also available at this spot. receivers I his is one area where the Braves feel they are loaded. We want to get a couple of corps of receivers and use them like B YU does, explained the coach. Senior Branden White has been the big surprise of the camp and hes joined by Eddie Snow, Benson Alder, Doug Farrell and Bobby Minhondo. Coach Peterson also noted that Rick Balderston could play some receiver along with Mark Packer and Mike Jensen. tight end Bountiful has one of the best state in 65" 200 lbs. senior Matt Thornley. Matt played a lot as a junior and hes going to be one of the targets in the passing attack. in the offensive line Bountiful has a repu- tation of being big on the line and this year is by no means small. Truth is this is probably one of the biggest lines they have in some time. Senior Stuart Christensen, 6 185 lbs. moves in to take over the center position with Mike Allsop and Art Miller also in the picture. Senior Ike Cleverly, 62 210 lbs. and junior Kevin Kilburn, 61 215 lbs., will handle the two guard spots while senior Dave Smith, 63 225 lbs., and Steve Bearnsen 62 195 lbs., will hold down the tackle positions. This group has been together for several winning seasons and with the help of their line coach, Kim Peterson, they could be one of the best around. defensive line Once again the Big beef makes a tough job easier and with Dave Smith (73), Art Miller (57), Steve Bearnsen (back), Matt Thornley (87) and Mike Lee (43) the Braves have plenty of beef. Peterson Takes Reigns Dave Wlgham w hen a coaching change is made on any level a mist of uncertainty always clouds over the team. Such is the case with the Bountiful football squad this fall. PAUL WAITE stepped down as head coach after ten successful seasons and handed the reigns to his top assistant Kim Peterson. Kim, entering his first year as head man for the Braves football program, has people thinking out loud if he can carry on the winning tradition. Kim Peterson is a winner. He has been a big part of the football success over the It ) i ff f I ,, linebackers Bountifuls defense Bountiful Set For A New Era Clipper Sports Braves will be big up front with Bearnsen and Rob Frankie (61 230 lbs.) slated to play the down tackles with Thornley and Lee playing the defensive ends. years and has built up the Braves wrestling program. He knows the system; knows the opposition, and also knows he has some good talent this year. BOUNTIFUL lost a lot of folks to graduation last year, they always do, but this group of seniors is anxious to prove they can play with anyone in the region. Emotions are running high in the Bountiful Camp with the addition of Warren Hatch as the offensive coordinator. Word is the Braves are going to air the ball more this method. season under the Peterson-Hatc- h In looking at the talent we have this year it became obvious to us choaches that we could and should throw the football more, noted Peterson. Coach Hatch has some great ideas and methods on offense and the kids are responding well to them, he f mm ; i , (j added. BOUNTIFUL has always been strong on defense, where Peterson has been in charge, and this year will be exception. As one opposing coach noted, they do as good a job with the split six defense as anyone in the state. Here then is a capsule look at each position for the Braves this fall. quarterback Senior Eric Johnson has the inside track, right now, but the coaching staff is also very high on senior Todd Burgen. We would feel comfortable with either of them, noted their coach. Junior Rob Faddis isnt too far behind the two older players, so the Braves feel they are strong at this spot. re- volves around the play of their linebackers and this year they have a good group to work with. Stuart Christensen, Art Miller (6 185 lbs.), Mike Allsop(6l 1801bs.)and Trent Jones (5 11 175 lbs.) are the starters, as of now, but they are being pushed by some people. secondary The Braves are inexperienced here and only time will tell. They have good athletes in Bobby Minhondo, Jeff Allen, Benson Alder and Eddie Snow to play the three spots with Eric Johnson available if needed. As in the past, the Braves will feature a big line with some fine running backs and some good receivers. They key to their offense is just how well the players catch on to the new offensive look. Defensively theyll have the same look with the same coach and probably the same results. NO ONE picked a clear cut favorite for the region title, but the name Bountiful sure kept coming up in the conversation. |
