Show DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER, AUGUST 25, 1982 SOUTH DAVIS ADVERTISER REFLEX JOURNAL BULLETIN LEADER AUGUST 26, 1982 Dave Wigham Clipper sports T the years the Woods Cross football teams have compiled some impressive records. They have had some great individuals wearing the red, white and blue who have gone on to do their thing on the college level. Cats Seek State Berth YET, ONE thing a Wildcat team has yet to accomplish is to secure a berth in the state football The closest a team came was back in the Jason Whitney, Mark Tate era that lost to Bountiful in a one game play-off- s. play-of- f. The main goal, of this years senior class, is to become the first Woods Cross club to get into the elite state tournament. To do that, the Cats have to finish in the top four of a region that is as close talent wise as anyone could ask for. Coaches around the league agree this group of Cats could very well finish in the top half of region play. They even concede that the Cats could win the league. However, with a region this close, anything could happen. The Cats could win all their games and again they could just as easily lose all of them. SENIORS ON the team arent about to let the latter happen. They have been around for three years waiting for their chance to set some school history. Second year man, Larry Eldracher, is excited and optimistic about his club this season. He sees this years club as a little different from his first group. Last year we had three small but quick running backs. This year we have some who arent as fast but are much bigger. The key to us will be the play of our young players on the line. Well have some juniors going to war in the trenches and if they come through for us then well battle anyone we play, he noted. Here is a quick look at they years Wildcat team. quarterback senior Todd Dyson, who saw some action last year, will run the offense this season. Hes not a pure passer, explained his coach, but if he plays with confidence he can do a lot of things for us back there. The best thing about him is that hes improving all the time. A pair of juniors, Brian Mugleston and Mike Famer, are the back ups. running backs Doug Sendobrv, who is better known for his ambushes from a linebacking spot, has moved from fullback to tailback this season. Hes our best athlete who can run and catch so we moved him to this position to take advantage of his skills, Coach Eldracher noted. At6l 195 lbs. Doug can run just about anywhere he wants to. He also has good speed. Senior Brad Lynn, who is smaller but faster, will also see playing time here. With Sendobry moving from his fullback spot the coaches needed to find a bull for this spot. Senior Keith (Chumley) Prows has been moved from guard to this position. It isnt all new to him since he played there as a sophomore. Were looking for big things from him, his coach said. Another senior, Kevin Ostler, is back from a knee injury and the coaches are impressed with his progress and will use his talents this season. receivers here the Cats are excited with what they call, three excellent receivers. Seniors Troy Cullimore and Troy Ful- - Returning starters Troy Cullimore (87), Keith Prows (33), Doug Sendobry (5), and Scott Longston (86) are four seniors looking to get Wildcats on the winning track. ler are joined by junior Travis McBeth to give the Wildcats some speed and great hands. Well use all three to alternate the plays. At tight end the Cats are bragging up 63 190 lbs. senior Scott Longston as their man. Scott has good size and quickness to go along with his agressive style of blocking. offensive line Woods Cross has a different look on the line in that their tackles dont weigh a lot, but they are tall. Their guards are bigger then most high school guards. Two seniors, Ken Krogue (5 10 180 lbs.) and Scott Worthen (5 10 164 lbs.) are battling it out for the starting center spot and the two are even at this writing. Senior Byron Hatch 62I85 lbs.) will hold down one tackle spot with juniors Lance Eden (62 185 lbs.), Kevin Hicks (62 200 lbs.) and Robert Easton (5 11 190 lbs.) fighting for the other tackle spot. At the guard position a couple of juniors and one senior are involved in earning the two starting berths. They are Rick Forsgren (6 190 lbs.), a junior, who the coach noted will be outstanding by the end of the season, is battling junior David Jones (5 11 190 lbs.) and senior Trent Coon (5 11 185 lbs.). defensive line Scott Longston is back to play the strong outside linebacker spot with Roy Marchant fighting Travis McBeth for the weak side backer. In the middle is Sendobry and Prows, a couple of Dick Butkus clones if there ever was one. This group of linebackers is one of the best in the region as a group. Word is they take no survivors. secondary again the Cats feel strong at this position with Troy Cullimore the line will be and John Thomas at the corners. Troy Fulanchored, literally by 6 230 lbs. senior Ken ler at weak safety and Mike Dailey at strong Fincher wholl play the nose guard.
