Show I 1 REFLEX k LEADER AUGUST 26, 1982 BULLETIN JOURNAL Falcons Football Is Like A Fence, Every Link Must Do Its Job Different Taylor Says Keith Duncan Keith Reflex Sports - - KAYSVILLE The way Brian Bock likes to describe the mechanics of the offensive line at Davis High sorta reminds you of the way a basic chain works. Without all the links doing their job, the main task never quite gets done. EVERYONE has to realize that if their job doesnt get done, then the entire play breaks down. This is especially true this year with so many small players. It wouldnt matter if we had one or two outstanding players, everyones task is as equally important, said Bock 30 minutes after another Dart morning session had concluded. Weve always been a pretty close unit (went 0 in league J.V. games last year) and things really started to come together last season on the line, continued Bock. BOCK, WHO never started playing football until high school and at which time the coaches picked his position, likes the offensive guard slot. Its a position that demands some quickness but not a lot of size, though it wouldnt hurt to be big. "Playing on the line is more difficult than it appears and the more I play it the more I find out just how difficult it is to play it right. The biggest challenge to me is just becoming the best that I can possibly be, said Bock. Norm Taylor, who has CLEARFIELD looked awesome during the Falcons first week of prep football practice, believes there is a total difference between the 82 team and the team of last year that muscled out only one victory. THERE IS a big difference! There is much more unity and I know the will to win is a difference. We've (the seniors) won in the past and we want to continue the tradition. Last year was very disappointing to us. I think weve got the leadership within the team to lead us a long ways, somebody that can really spark a fuse, said Taylor, a senior. 5-- THE 0 says he has stuck with football for two simple reasons. Its been the friends Ive made and the hard discipline that the sport has taught me, he said. Because of Bocks tough mental attitude, Ward Sawley believes that he can play both offense and defense this season. On defense, Brian will get the call to play middle linebacker where he saw some action last year on the varsity level. In fact he was one of the very few athletes this year that played varsity ball last season. 6-- Duncan Bulletin Sports 0 TiFTf! er BOCK GETS his kicks in football from seeing the entire offensive or defensive units succeeding together. I dont really get off on the battles as some do. 1 just like to and Im not out after any one done get my job person. But at times on defense youre forced to go against people one on one and of course that doesnt bother me. But to have some player on our team look across the line and jest that he is after someone the entire game wont get us anywhere. one-on-o- ITS NOW countdown time for the Darts season to begin. Bock admitted that he and his teammates were not thinking of Ben Lomond much last week mainly because they were trying to get the basics down. But this week we will be concentrating on them, said Bock. It will be a challenge for our team to improve each week. If guys like (Kevin) Pitts and -- - OFF AND FLOATING Discipline kept Brian Bock in football. others keep progressing, we will be alright, said Bock. BRIAN LOOKS for Viewmont to be very tough in league play with their tailback and fullback being back. The thing (Steve) Capu-t- o is that youve got to figure out his move before he decides on it, Bock stated. Highland will be up and down according to, Bock. In last years J.V. game the Darts were up by 30 at halftime but the Rams bounced right back into the game with their explosive passing game. If their passing game is on, theyll be tough to beat, he said. WOODS CROSS is respectable too according to Brian. Bountiful will be tough again is also what he believes. I think it will be our team spirit and unity that carries us through the season, said Bock, People who know much about us, know that we depend on these factors quite a bit. Because if we lose them, then we really havent got very much to fall back on where other teams might. EARLY, extremely early to get started, said Margo Jones, the veteran coach at Clearfield. But playing in a tournament is much more advantageous than playing dual matches because the kids get more matches, she said. Roy and Ogden will be the other two squads ITS m i Preseason Polls Are One Mans Guess Dave Wigham The football season is just now coming on and already some national publications have amazed me with their picks and polls. The greatest mystery to me, though, comes from Inside Sports latest issue. Hawaii, BYU, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah, Colorado State, UTEP and finally Air Force. pre-seas- NOT A mention was made of either Wyoming or Hawaii in their top 20 yet they rate them to finish higher in the conference than their number 18 selection. I do have to point out that the two articles were by different authors but youd think writing for the same publication they would be a little more together in their picks. IN THEIR September issue their experts in college football rank the Cougars of BYU as their number 18 team in the nation. Youre not going to get an argument out of this guy on that issue. The issue then goes on to predict the finishes in eight of the football conferences around the land. Trouble is they picked the Cougars, the same No. 18 team, to finish third in their con- Inside IN THE back of the magazine Sports shows just what the polls really mean. top 20 from a year They wrote the as UPI, themselves, AP, predicted by ago Play Boy and the Sports Illustrated, Sporting News. Only three of them were able to get 14 of the final top 20 in their preseason picks. The biggest mystery was that only one of them, Sporting News, had the eventual number one team, Clemson, in their top 20. Even at that they had them selected as the number 19 team in the nation. ference. BOTH DAVIS and Clearfield are expected to be competitive in their respective leagues, once the season finally gets started. s. TAYLOR, WHO will start for sure at an offensive tackle position and then again at a tackle position on defense, began playing very sparingly at first on the varsity level last season. It was a year ago that Viewmonts J.V. blistered Clearfield 28-- but it was enough to make the Falcons mad. They went on to win every other J.V. game with the exception of the Bonneville game. I dont think we were ready for Viewmont in that J.V. game, said Taylor, Weve worked hard since that time though and I think now we are a little more physically prepared and ready to get after them." POLLS ARE nothing more than one mans guess. the guys. commented Taylor. Perhaps another reason he might like playing defense so much is that one of his best friends, J.C. VonCollin, will be playing right in back of him at a linebacker spot. Weve been good friends for quite a while, said Norm. SO WHAT IF Clearfield were to lose to Viewmont on opening night? Would the season be lost? Taylor doesnt seem to think so. Weve showed last year that after losing to Viewmont in J.V. that we could bounce back. We had some specially palled team meetings and let everyone understand what they must do. INTO THIS year we have still had those team meetings, with and without the coaches. The coaches tell us that we are winners and I honestly believe that they have changed their philosophies to adapt to us. Even if we happen to lose to Viewmont on Friday, we know that our season isnt over, not until the final game with Layton, he said. Hancock, w ho will be counting heavily upon the services of Taylor through the season, called his ability unlimited. If he proves himself on the field this fall he may very well be a good prospect for someone someday, said Hancock. dog-on-w- n GRAND OPENING Beene Signs In Wyoming - POWELL, WYOMING Northwest Community College womens coach, Tom Case, has added yet another Utah high school athlete to his list of recruits for the 1982-8- 3 basketball season. an obviously accurate appraisal considering her 17 point per game scoring average last year.
