Show $1 1 . DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER, AUGUST 25, 1982 SOUTH DAVIS ADVERTISER. REFLEX W ' t JOURNAL BULLETIN i ' LEADER AUGUST 26, 1982 DAVIS Davis Deploy Tactics Look Little Then Win Big Keith Duncan Reflex Sports M uch of the same story that surrounded last years Davis team once again is part of the 1982 group. The Darts are small and have no depth to speak of, but the 1981 crew proved the critics wrong and went on to beat powerful Bountiful and tie for the Region Four crown. Can they repeat this? IF THEY do, it would have to be something short of a miracle. The kids in Kaysvil-l- e believe in themselves but that alone cant make up for lack of size, speed and talent, all of which make champions. Im pleased with the way the kids have worked during summer conditioning. Theyve been very religious about it and Im it will pay off for them. But we do have some disadvantages in size and other areas again. Well have to work twice as hard as last year to make some positive things happen, commented Ward Sawley, now in his fourth season as head coach. sure THE GOOD ole double wing, the misdirection offense that seems to give everyone fits, will again be the motto of the Davis offense. Starting with the offense, here is a positioned look at the 1982 Davis Darts. Experience says that a team should grovel quarterback through a rebuilding year following a major graduation like Davis just had. So why are region teams timid about playing the Darts? Senior Rick Secrist appears to have paved the way as the Darts number one choice as a signal caller. He saw plenty of action in the game against Bonneville last year and helped sustain a winning drive touchcown against East. Steve Sargent, Casey Lloyd and Greg Norton will also be given a look. Secrist may be one of the best overall athletes on the team. winning backs Davis has never had such a wide open choice to fill its back field. Seniors Brad Nielsen, Brad King, Darren Ryujin, Ben Knowlton, Clain White and Tim White will get their chance along with talented juniors in Ryan Smith, Mark Miller, Jeff Hammer, Andy Keck, James Warden and Mike Woodward. receivers Kent Lyman, senior receiver, favorite target and why be Secrists may not, the two have been practicing their routines all summer long. Secrist will also throw to Tad Conley, Shawn Spriggs and Jay Jeppson, all seniors. The junior receiving corp will begin with Keck and Woodward and continue with Randy Smith and Chris Stevenson. line Davis misdirection offense may be the best thing for this years crop of linemen. This may be one of the smallest group of interior people in many years for Davis. But despite it all, Sawley and Company usually come up with something. Brian Bock, senior, will probably lead the way. He saw more action than most in last years games. His leadership talents will also be used to a great extent, not only in the school where he serves as studentbody president, but on the field as well. Other lineman include Kevin Pitts, Mike Hay ward, John Saban, Korman King, Craig Kottrell, and Lance Christensen, all seniors. The juniors are built up with guys like Jeff Sampson, Sean Kilgrow, Greg McNabb, Drew Johnson, Ricky Francis, Jimmy Larkins, Robert Reid, Kevin Swallow and Mark Cooper. A FEW sophomores could also see some action in Roddie Meacham, Andy Neff, Mike Orton and Scott Ward. linebackers Davis will miss the services in the line of players like Troy Meacham backer ranks, but theyll begin building witl seniors like Ryujin, Cowley, Bock, Spriggs Norton, Knowlton, Saban and Hayward Juniors like Smith, Woodward, Kilgrow McNabb, Stevenson and Hammer coul also see plenty of action. secondary It will be guys lik Secrist who will prevent oppossing teams t kill the Darts through the air. Others wh will see plenty of time defending the pas will be Nielsen, Lyman, King, Tim White Miller and Keck. |
