Show Spring Brings Club Activity To The Valley a x d.a Y SUNDAY,MAY2,1971 Page 21 Candlelight and soft music created an atmosphere of romantic elegance for Dancing Friends at the annual formal dinner dance at the Wilkinson Center ballroom this week, ART CHAIRMAN,Mrs.H.Vern Wentz, discusses the annual Art Tea of the Oren. Women’s Club with William P. Bird, instructor at Orem High School. The 22nd annual Art Tea sponsored by the Orem Women’s Club will be held May 12 at 3:30 pin. in the Orem High School Little Theater. students have received trophies, cash awards and art materials in appreciation for their fine work. This year a $100 scholarship Oneof the club’s first projects was to petition the Alpine School Board for an art departmentat the Lincoln High School and to stimulate interest among the 1,000 students then enrolled. The club sponsored the first art exhibit at Lincoln High Schoolin the mosoutstanding portfolio and a total of $50 will be presented in cash awards to winners in five categories: oil painting, water colers, graphics, crafts and sculpture. The students are under the able direction of William Bird, art instructor at OHS. Mrs. Hugh Vern (Evelyn) Wentz is the art chairman of the club. The art will be displayed May11, 12, 13 and 14 in the foyer of the high school. Parents, families, friends and the public are all invited to view the exhibit. Mothersand daughterswill be guests with special tributes to be given to the mothers on May12. 1949, Thefirst exhibit was hung in the Scera lobby, with a poster over each exhibit telling the public about the contest and also about the art awards.Sixty-nine students participated in the contest that year. Everyyearsince then the club has recognized the talents and achievements of art students at a special club reeting. Denice Gardner, Doug Whitaker and Peggy Webb entertained with music centered on the theme, “Love Is So Sweet in the Springtime.” Dinner was served at tables attractively decorated with red and pink arrangementsand each of the 150 ladies was presented will be given to the senior with with a lovely candleholder and candle. Following the dinnerhour, the newofficers and board members were presented, They are: Dr. and Mrs. Marcus Jensen, presidents; Dr. and Mrs. Jim Polve, treasurers; Dr. and Mrs. Doug Smoot, secretaries; Dr. and Mrs. Boyd Greenwood, Mr. and Mrs, Max Weaver, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Riggs, Mr. and Mrs. Derrell Berrett, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Kay, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Gurney and Mr.and Mrs. Evan Nielsen, board members. This annual event is highly anticipated during the year and is the closing meeting for the club year. Special tokens of tribute will be presented to all mothers present and also in many cases to daughters whom the club honorson this occasion. The very popular “Our Gang” singers will be the special entertainers andwill helpto insure that the event will be a happy one. Also at the meeting, new officers for next year will be introduced andofficially installed. ‘They are: President, Mrs. Carl Johnson; vice president, Mrs. Elwood Sundberg; secretary, Mrs. DeLynn Heaps; reporter, Mrs. Farr Hatch; program chairman, Mrs. Herald Vance; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Dale McCann. A “Spring Fling” fashion show and installation of new officers featured the Spring luncheon meeting of Utah Technical College WomenSaturday at the school. Fashions were shown from Clarks and Mrs. Gordon Moses entertained with vocal numbers. Mrs. Blanch T. Miller, president, welcomed the guests and presented the newofficers. They are Mrs. Shirl Groneman, president; Mrs. Don Reynolds, first vice president; Mrs. Richard Hoover, second vice president; Mrs. Ross Fazzio, secretary; Mrs. Richard Rasmussen, treasurer, and Mrs. S. J. Roper, historian-reporter. Mrs. Lew Banks was general chairman of arrangements. REHEARSINGthe dramatic poetry of the Browningsfor the annual Browning Society meeting are, from left, Sheryl Brown, Nathan Lewis and Debi Rawlings. “Tne works of Browning are as young as today” has been selected as the principal theme of the annual meeting of the Browning Society on Thursday at the Provo Utility Auditorium at 3 p.m. Emphasizing the youthful philosaphywill be readings from the works of both the Brownings by Provo High School and Brigham Young University students under the direction of Mrs. Gladys Nelson and Ray Jones, instructors. Mr. Jones will also read. Music for the afternoon will also be presented by students. A tribute to Mrs. Christian Jensen whoorganized the group in 1923 will be given by a grandson, Kent Harrison. Anyoneinterested is invited to attend by the committee which includes Mrs. Eugene Faux, president; Mrs. L. R. Maycock, Mrs. George Rea, Mrs, Guy Callahan and Mrs. Tom Bullock. BOSS OF THE YEARaward is given by Grace Wilson to Harold Harmer of Paysonat the annual Boss Night of the TiUte Chapter, American Business Women’s Association. Harold Harmer, administrator of Payson Hospital, was presented an Indian headdress as his “Boss of the Year”award by Ti-Ute Chapter, American Business Women's Association, this week at the Rodeway Inn. The presentation was made by Grace Wilson, Boss Night chairman. Mr. Harmer was nominated by Marilyn Ellsworth and Ruby Wilson. He was business manageratthe hospital for 10 years before becoming adminstrator in 1979. Guests were welcomed by Sharon Barnett, president, who also presented the Woman of the Year award to Diane Howell. Mrs. Howell was toastmistress for the evening and introduced the speaker, Dennis Augustus, regional director of Etta Lee Homes for Boys. Mr. Augustus wave a history of the project which provides a homelife for boys in difficulty and discussed the purposes and goals of the home. Verda Swenson and Tess Bowen created the attrective decorations with Indian motif. RIVERSIDE LADIES GOLF ASSOCIATION will hold the opening luncheon to inaugurate the new season Tuesday. Coffee and rolls will be served beginning at 8:30 a.m. with drawing for partners and shotgun startat 9:30. Luncheonwill be served at noonin the dining room.
