A spokesman for the M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute said lateSaturday morning they would not report the Denverite’s condition unless it changed, Friday night it was reported ascritical. Doctors at the hospital, where the football star was taken 10 days ago, said Steinmark was suffering from the same form of malignant sarcoma cancer which caused his leg to be amputated Dec. 12, 1969. Texas coach Darrell Royal, who had planned to attend a meeting of Southwest Conference athletic directors in College Station, Tex., went instead to Houston Friday to be with Steinmark’s parents. Steinmark complained of a sorness in his left leg the week preceeding the Arkansas-Texas game in 1969—a contest viewed on national television and watched in person by President Nixon. Six days following the Texas 15-14 victory in that game, Steinmark underwent exploratory surgery. Surgeons found the malignant tumor in the left, and ainputated the limb at the thigh. “The problems are associated with the one whichoriginally beset,” a hospital spokesman said Friday. This means that the off-season drills are going according to plan. The Cougars started off two weeks ago with 76 players. ‘They now have 68 in uniform. This attrition rate is normal, and everyone — including the players — seems in high spirits. Hudspeth also reported that the practice sessions wereof two kinds, good and bad. But, fortunately, the good ones were far out numbering the bad sessions. This was evident at Saturday morning’s scrimmage. There was plenty of hardhitting, and the session was carried off with both the offense and defense having their moments. Offensively, fans on hand for the practices are seeing some new faces.
