Howard C. Nielson, R-Provo; Mrs. Lillian Hayes, a Provo citizen concerned about the planned highway; and representatives from Utah Power and Light and the Uinta National Forest. William Hurley, the state Road Department's geologist, explained how the tests that the state will run next week will insure that the road can be built to avoid failureoftheslope of the landslide mass to the north oi Wicks and across the canyon from Springdell. Will Not Cut Slope Mr.Hurley explained that the road will not cut into the toe of the slope, which would cause sliding, but thatit will go higher on the landslide mass covering the Manning Canyon shale. Engineers will continue drilling in the landslide mass to determine how deep theslide mass is over the shale. The road will not intersect the shale level, said sliding will be i A considerable amountoffill will be required in some areas of the canyon, notably across from Springdell, where the road will drop from the landslide mass to about the level of the canyon floor, a distance of approximately 100 feet, according to Bert Taylor, highway engineer. Rechanel River At present, the road plans would require onlya single halfmile rechanneling of the river. The portion to be rechaneled under present plans would be below the Murdock Diversion Dam in an area of the river that is “biologically dead,” according to Mr. Kay. The rechanneling would be done according to recommendations by the state Fish and Game Department, he added. Anuther trouble area, near Rotary Park, was discussed by Mr. Hurley. The Hazards Commitee notedthatplacing the road on the south side of Rotary Park would involve it with an extremely hazardous high, loose rock slope. Here again, said Mr. Hurley the roadwill not cut into the slope for fear of causing sliding. It will pass further to the north, butstill pass on the south side of the park. Thefill from the road will come quite close to the Rotary Park pavilion.
