Steve Fitts started for the Cougars and went seven innings allowing six runs but only one of them earned as the Cougars finished the day with seven errors. Brad pitched the eighth and Steve McNulty, the winner. pitched the eighth giving up a run on only onehit. Mike Larkin pitched eight inningsbutleftin the ninth after the homerun by Cardon. Firsi baseman Roger McKenzie came on in reliefbut left after the walk to Coon. Sid Taylor camein to face Bevun and gave up the game-winninghit, a sharp single to center field. In Friday’s doubleheader BYUpoundedout a 25-3 win in the opener as the cougars got three-run homeruns from Cardon, Dane Iorg and Coon. Coon also added a solo blast in the BYU barrage. In the second game, Wyoming jumped ahead 40 in the second inning behind the pitching of MattSterling. Cougar lefthander Steve Easton then settled down andretired the Cowboys without arun until the top of the seventh. Meanwhile the Cougars went aheadin the fifth on a three-run homerun by Dane Jorg and a two run blast by Lee Iorg. That made it 54 going into the top of the seventh. The winning run Saturday came when Dave Coon scored from first base on a single by pitchhitter Brad Bevan. Dick Belliston opened the inning with a singie and Gerald Cardon clouted a homerun over theleft field fence to cut Wyoming’s lead to 8-6. Dane Iorg was safe at first after a perfect drag bunt down the third baseline. After a couple of pop flies Mike Staffieri homered to tie the game at 8-8, Coon then walked to set the stage for Bevan’s game-winning hit. — scheduled for seven innings.
