Show 4- 4A For Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, July 6, 1983 Safety, Economy Check the Tires Before Vacation If you are getting ready for a vacation, your cars tires are likely to be in for some added abuse. Tire pressure that is too high or too low and improper tire wear are problems you should check before you leave on a trip, says Steve Bilbao, extension safety specialist at Utah State University. He says air pressure goes up with temperature and you may find it is higher than when you last put air in. On the other hand, air may have leaked out since winter. Bilbao says a 10 degree difference in the outside temperature can throw tire pressure off by one pound per square inch. Four to five pounds discrepancy from the recommended tire pressure can cause poor tire wear and decreased mileage. Safety is the most important reason to avoid inflation. In rainy weather, low tire pressure can result in hydroplaning." he says. The safety specialist says ideal tire pressure is based on having a cold tire. Driving your car even a couple miles can heat the tire up enough to throw off the reading. For this reason, he suggests having your own tire pressure gauge at home. Otherwise, the reading you get after driving to the service station may be invalid.
