Show Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, July 6, 1983 In Wake of Flood Layton && " ' 3A 4 ' 4 County Officials Look at Disaster Readiness Woman Retires By SUSAN TANNER HOLMES - Review Correspondent FARMINGTON As cities and the county governments in Davis County take a closer look at the emergency and s they have faced in the past month they will be reevaluating and assessing needs. In about two weeks there will be a critique with the cities and the county on disaster procedures, plans, policies and possible changes, said John county emergency services director. One area that is sure to see disaster-problem- Zip-pr- changes is the area of communications. The public telephone served us to a degree, but we feel the necessity to have a county-widradio band, said Glen E. Saunders, chairman of the Davis County commission. While no firm plans on a new communication system have been made, commissioners and city governments feel we need some means to assure uninterrupted communication with each community. We did feel at times we did not have access," said Saunders. Another area found lacking,' e but which was secured during the crisis, was portable radios and monitoring equipment.. Is the county looking at purchasing more equipment for a future disaster? There is no way we could ever have enough equipment, said Saunders. But we have lists of contrac- tors and individuals in the area who own equipment. The list was updated just two months prior to the floods at the request of Governor Matheson. At that time they were looking at Great Salt Lake flooding." more than willing to help, but because the disasters hit on a holiday weekend, some of the contractors werent available and it was difficult to locate some equipment. But by Tuesday most of the contractors were located and working, said Saunders. City and county officials will be taking a long hard look at a closed culvert. We had one three quarter mile culvert, four feet in diameter that plugged solid on Burton said Creek, Equipment owners were Saunders.
