These select holes are long enough to challenge even the longest hitter, but fair enough to reward a good shot with a chance for a birdie. These holes would make Jack Nicklaus proud. They are the holes golfers remember long after the round is over, usually with a smile, a few choice words and a tear in the eye. Trevino must have had number five in mind. Any hook or pull on the drive will put the ball over the fence which runs down the left side of the hole. However, a slice or fade will put the golfer farther away from the green on this dogleg left hole. This is a thinking mans hole, one Nicklaus would love. A small lake on the left, and trees and a fence on the right side of the fairway keep golfers honest on their drives. Three bunkers guarding an elevated green make the second shot a challenge. Leave the approach shot short and a long bunker shot, one of the toughest golf shots, faces you. Get too aggressive and the ball will bounce off the firm green into more trouble. The major change is being made on the green of the 17th hole, a 398-yar- d par-fou- r. The green on top of the hill is being replaced with one which will be to the left and below the present one in a small valley. ' The existing 17th hole is an unfair hole because of the peculiar bounces a ball takes on the ridge, said Hualde. The new green will be tiered with bunkers in the front and a pond in the back. It will be ready for play by this summer. The present distance of the hole will not be altered, although the golfers second shot will be shorter due to hitting to a more level target. double-- Another major change on the course is the position of the blue tees on the 18th hole. The new tee will be located east of the present one and be elevated. This, along with the filling of half of the pond in the fairway, will give the shorter hitter more landing area on his tee shot. Also, the womens tee on the 13th hole, a par-5- , will be placed in an area 502-yar- d d double-bogie- below the present teeing area, which will give the women a wider tee-sh- 335-yar- landing ot area. Ditches on the right side of number 4 and on the left side of the 12th hole will be filled and no longer played as a hazard. Hualde said this change will beautify the course and not penalize the poorer golfer who often times hit into these ditches. The county budgeted for these changes on Davis, which was built in 1963. Hualde reported that $47,000 approximately 86,000 d nine-hol- e rounds were played at the course in 1982, making it the most heavily played course in the state. 7- iron to a wedge, might. And thats as good a description of the 17th as any. It is possible to reach the green in two, but a bunker in front of the green will catch all but the longest hitter. An average golfer hitting two good wood shots is still left with about an uphill pitch to a blind pin position. At the Hill Field course, the seventh hole is a diabolical dogleg right par-- of 420 yards that forces most golfers to try and cut the dogleg on the drive. 463-yar- d 5 5 p n 80-ya- 4 However, thick rough on the right side will snag a ball and make it virtually impossible to reach the. green in two shots. Even then, to long-iroa mid-iroapproach to a huge green, which is difficult to see because of the contour of the ground, is no bargain. Bountiful Golf Courses 12th hole, a par-- of only 346 yards, is one of the best holes for its length in Utah. Smart golfers use a fairway wood or long iron off the tee because the drive must be hit straight. A small forest on the right and a hill which slopes down to a fence on the left will catch even the slightest drive. The wide fairway narrow could be used to conduct a sobriety test.
