A dozen or so small faces bob up and down in the pool and seem almost lost in the long lines of ripples that follow them as they paddle in slow, graceful movements across the pool. One of these small faces belongs to Elmer G. Thorum, a He lets spry, active a big smile envelop his face as he spots a photographer to the side of the pool taking his picture while he swims. He stops to talk to the photographer and then turns to me. Thorum is repeating a daily routine that began nearly 80 years ago. I learned to swim in an irrigation ditch, he smiles. This routine perhaps is what has kept Thorum healthy and still active at an age when many are confined to wheelchairs. He pauses, then his arms splash into the water again, as he makes the slow, seemingly effortless trek to the other side of the pool and then returns. He pushes off the side of the pool again. When he returns, he says swimming is good exercise. Thorum also takes evening walks.
