Director, Dr. Tim Hunt, said the fair will provide an opportunity for junior and senior high students throughout the district to exhibit and compete for awards. For many participants, the fair will be the culmination of months of experimental research and data gathering. Judges for the fair will be from the Air Force, Army, Navy, Weber State College and private industry. OK, so you did it. But now for the championship, spell downtrodden. Thats the kind of pressure Treb Winegar was facing Wednesday before he won the Davis County School District Spelling Bee. Winegar, a fifth grader at Washington Elementary in Bountiful and the youngest of the seven finalists, was battling Mike Call, a seventh grade student at Centerville Junior High, for the championship. Call then misspelled de- corum and Winegar got it right and then spelled downtrodden correctly to win the championship. Other finalists in the contest were: Jeff Orme, a sixth grader at Burton Elementary; Sabra Smith, a sixth grader at West Point Elementary; Eddie Burke, an eighth grader at Central Davis Junior High; Davis Marsden, a sixth grader at West Bountiful and Sam Ferrell, an eighth grader at Mill Creek Junior High. The contest was open to fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grad- ers in the district. Winegar will now enter the state spelling bee at Clayton Intermediate School in Salt Lake City, Friday, April 15. The winner of that contest will represent Utah in the National Spel- o a ling Bee in Washington, D.C., June 0. The state contest is sponsored by the Deseret News in cooperation with the State PTA and the State Board of Education. High School Students To Exhibit Art Work The 24th Annual Utah High Art exhibit opens at the Salt Palace in downtown Salt Lake City on Monday, March 21. Preparations will begin on March 17 when the works of art will be hung. Judges will make their decisions on March 18. Approximately 2,000 pieces School ranging from drawings and and paintings to sculpture ceramics will represent 30 to 40 participating high schools from all over the state. : High school seniors vying for university scholarships will enter five pieces as part of their senior portfolio; all other participating students are allowed to enter only one item. On Tuesday, March 22, senior G March 17, 18, 19 A 20 12 Noon to 8 P.M. Daily art students will have an opportunity to discuss their work with peers and representatives from colleges and universities. In the evening on March 22 Dee Events Center Weber State College to 9 p.m. a reception is planned for the artists and their parents and friends. Teachers and members of the press and other interested citizens are invited. During the reception, awards and scholarships to the winning students will be presented.
