Show THE MONROE FATALITY A description of it by the only kye eye witness editor deseret newy owing te my intimate acquaintance with the occurrence and in order to inform his bis friends with particulars I 1 submit the following in regard to the sad accident to brother K R W county superintendent of sevier district schools on OnT friday august after teachers eral examination and while engaged in a casual conversation in the superintendents ten dents office brother Bas spoke of a premeditated trip to Monroe canon desiring a companion after my agreement to accompany him he promised to meet me at my residence in elsinore Ela inore on saturday sept ath accordingly became he came and we started from rom Elsinore Els lnore about 11 a in expecting to return by 4 p in arriving in the calion two and half miles from monroe we left our con meyance and proceeded afoot already an hour had bad passed and feeling somewhat tired we had bad commenced our return taking with us a few specimens gathered on the way when the temptation to climb a rugged cliff became too ton strong for resistance this cliff formed one side of a narrows the walls wails of which ascended barly to a height varying vary lna from fifty to feet the creek passing through these narrows fills the entire width on climbing about sixty leet we obtained the expected view and while rolling rocks off the cliff tor for amusement I 1 turned at k a sudden clash and beheld my companion con panion sliding towards th the e precipice reci pice among rolling rocks and ai ready already twenty feet below me after h hearing eari the reports of the rocks below I 1 h hurried u r to the scene and found the dead body lying stretched on its face all attempts at ac revival proved of no avail the excitement of the moment however did not impair my presence of mind mina and din in course of an hour I 1 succeeded in getting on the spot half a dozen men mea from monroe including the justice of the peace we reached monroe with the corpse by dusk and about 11 II p in the coroner and sheriff from richfield having been toe telegraphed graphed for arrived the he inquest was held at once the report of which has bas already been published according to special request of the father of the deceased the body was taken to manti wre we brother Easm usen sen met us and continued with the corpse to his bis home in moroni where the body was entombed yesterday RICHARD HAAG teacher of elsinore EIs lnore district school richfield sept alth 1888 |
