| Show jeffreys escape the following communication is self explanatory SALT CITY september 15 1888 editor deseret news I 1 notice in the dally daily papers accounts of the escape of richard jeffrey irom the ibe county jail atil daleli are calculated to convey a false impression Impressio nto to the reader I 1 snail shall therefore deem it a favor favorit rif if you will allow me space in your valuable paper to tell my vie the story and place myself right before the theT public 4 it is stated in the paragraph published in your dally daily of wednesday and and again in the semiweekly semi weekly of friday that the billor had him working wort riu on the west side of athe court house and left him for a moment when he esi escaped sped the effect on the management of the lail jail being that the sheriff appointed a aie new jailor the ordinary reader must necessarily conclude from this paragraph that the entire blame of the affair attaches to me as jailor now the fact is that the prisoner was not really in my charge at the time j of his bis escape since my appointment it has been customary to ito employ the prisoner to perform the outdoor work around the jail and court house bouse and it has been in my habit to carefully lock them up when en I 1 left the jail for breakfast or dinner and let them out again on my return for sometime some time past there has been a man at work on the grounds in front of the new tail lail pr preparing e pari n g lawns walks ew etc and on severa several 1 occasions the sheriff during my absence has let the prisoners out to work placing them under the care of this man on monday last when I 1 went to dinner I 1 locked jeffrey up as usual but the sheriff arriving before my return let him aim out oat instructing the workman to watch him when I 1 returned I 1 went into the jail au office and the sheriff informed me that the plumbers were in the prison doing some work on the rotary an and giving me the keys intimated to me to ito stay and let them in and out oat of the cellar and assist them in handlin handling the machinery I 1 therefore remained in the jail for about two hours and a half when I 1 stepped out and Te requested quested jeffrey to finish cutting a fitce of lawn commenced in the morning on the south side not on the west side me of up the court house bouse in full view of the man he was working with and whom the sheriff had requested to te watch him after seeing him commence to work on the lawn I 1 returned to the plumbers in the jah and soon afterwards was informed that he had made his escape As will be seen from thistle this the prisoner erwa was snot not in my immediate custody u he be was let out oat in ia my absence and placed under the care of another while I 1 was performing other work inside the jail which the sheriff tully under L stood as he left me ma with the plumbers helping them inside the prison well knowing g that jeffrey was outside I 1 do not therefore consider that all the blame can reasonably be placed upon me EX JAILOR |
