Welcome Back SUSC Students BacktoSchool Specials Mens and Boys Jeans & PRINCE "We've got a foundation we want to build on," says Bill Groves, coach of the SUSC baseball team. After last year's record-breakin- g season, the 'Birds are left this year with a very young team. This past season brought the Thunderbirds their best record ever, finishing for the first time with more wins than losses. The team ended up 28 wins, seven more than their old record. According to Groves, 15 of the 45 players who came to the first practice last Monday are returning players, but only seven of them saw action on last year's 28-2- 3 ballclub. Of the remaining 30, 15 transferred from junior colleges, and four are four-yetransfers. The remaining 1 1 are freshmen. Although there were many ups and downs in the recruiting, Groves attributed this to the excellent they had many walk-onreputation of the baseball program, saying, "The word has gotten out about the program. People want to play." The reputation of SUSC's program has been boosted considerably by former team members such as shortstop Rich Lundahl who was drafted by the New York Mets and now plays in the Pennsylvania League. "Baseball has done well to put SUSC sports on the map," says Groves, pointing to a number of Thunderbird products who are now playing pro ball. Groves has two new assistants this year. Mike Federico and Kerry Bray, who graduated from SUSC last year, have returned as coaches. With the most experienced players gone, and the pitching staff seriously depleted, there will plenty of work for the new staff. With all of the changes, Groves feels like he's beginning all over again. While looking forward to the opportunity to build the image SUSC deserves. Groves still thinks "there are lots of question marks to be decided first." ar s.
