Show PACE 20 THE THUNDERBIRD TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 30, 1986 New Student Center work is delayed Forensic squad takes second SUSC's forensic squad brought home a second place sweepstakes finish from the University of Utah fall scrimmage. SUSC competed against 25 other schools from around the West and finished behind Arizona State University. In the individual events SUSC participated in several different categories. Roland Petrello placed first in persuasion and third in impromptu, with Jay Lane coming in fourth in the same event. In communication analysis, Shannon Lane placed third. Jay Lane also placed third with his extemporaneous speech. Petrello gained another first in poetry and freshman Jennifer Amodt was a finalist. In debate, Jeff Frasier and Melinda Riding tied for fifth place in the top speaker category. Petrello and Garn LeBaron each placed fifth in open CEDA and in the open speaking CEDA event LeBaron placed fourth and Jay Lane took the second place spot. The U of U scrimmage was a bit tougher this year, according to forensic director Suzanne Larson, because it was a larger competition than in years past as 25 schools from nine different states took part. The SUSC forensic squad had a banner year in 1985-8and Larson is hoping for an equally impressive year. The squad last year chalked up over 20 sweepstake awards. "Some of the strongest members graduated last spring," said Larson. "We have a young team this year, with only four seniors, Jay Lane, Shannon Lane, Garn LeBaron, and Roland (continued from page 3) the campus for a long time. The Centrum will be the west end of the building and the new Student Center will be the east, but construction of the second phase won't begin until the funding for it is found. "We hope to combine the new Student Center and the Centrum within three to 15 years and then the majority of the campus functions will be brought together," said Church. "Hopefully it will bring in private enterprises too. We're hoping to have a movie theatre, restaurants, a video store, and a ballroom." SUSC has not has a new Student Center sooner because it never had enough funding. Officials say that the school now has the finances. . "Being on a college team is a learning experience," said Amodt, "It's really been great so far because in the last few days the older members have really helped me out a lot." Most of the funding for new Student Center has come from student fees, general funding and the rent paid by the Bookstore and food services, said Church. The current Student Center will be used for conferences and the the Division of Continuing Education when the new Student Center is finished. Redington receives statewide award 6, Petrello." "Our main priority is ending up with a building that we can be proud of, that will meet our needs and that we can afford," said Church. "We have a greater need to make good decisions, instead of concentrating on the urgency to get the building built. One challenge has been the financing. We want to get the building for the best price, rather than getting it built so soon."
