Student support for SUSCs football team at home games is what makes the real difference in player attitudes. At least, thats what Head Coach Don Conrad said he believes. Conrad said he has tried to gain both student and local support since taking over the SUSC program last spring. In the six months Conrad has held the reins of the football team, he has made changes in the system, changes he said he feels will enable his team to salvage a good year and prepare for next season. First, he hired two new coaches, Larry Wilson and Ed Croson, and also changed the offensive strategy to include multiple sets and formations. With the revitalized formations, Conrad said he has placed emphasis on the passing game, offense a new wrinkle to giving the compliment its already potent running game. During the time Conrad has been at SUSC, he has watched the college grow, he said. Conrad graduated from SUSC in 1972 with a major in physical education and a minor in life sciences. He was a standout linebacker for the Thunderbird grid team. In the four years Conrad played for SUSC, he missed no games, and was selected alland was a small college conference, In his junior year, he helped lead the to the conference championship. A year later he was the elected team captain. After graduating, Conrad moved with his family to Magna, Utah, where he received a coaching and teaching job at Cyprus High School. There he taught biology, genetics and basic math, in addition to his duties as defensive coordinator. For two years Conrad served as assistant coach, and uoon the resignation of Cypress mentor Tom Crittenden he took over the head coaching job and led his squad to a region championship. Four years later, Conrad was hired as defensive coordinator at SUSC. Conrad, 33, played high school football in Eureka, Calif., and in Springville, Utah. He said the close relationship he developed with Mike Johnson, Springville coach, encouraged him to become a football coach. During that year, Conrad was named team and captain and was elected on both offense and defense. Once out of high school, Conrad received a scholarship to attend the University of Utah, but changes in the Ute coaching staff made him v Don Conrad was a standout linebacker at SUSC. decide to work in the Wyoming oil fields. By December of that year, he realized that oil rigs were not his way of life. Conrad moved back to Springville and was recruited to SUSC by Tom Kingsford, the coach at that time. When Conrad is not on the field or in the office, he likes to hunt, fish, golf, play racquetball, and tries to read at least one book a week. Conrad said he is very happy with his present job at SUSC, not only coaching but also teaching physical education. In the future, 1 would like to see a new weight training room along with an training program to make the players bigger, faster, and stronger, Conrad said.
