Montana cites fewer problems by Tracy Hopkins than drugs once Housing officials report that so far this year there have been few cases of vandalism, theft, or any other form of student wrong-doinAccording to Frank Montana, director of resident living, few problems have occurred thus far this year. One case of vandalism, in which nearly $150 of damage was done, has been the only problem to this point this year, Montana said. The student broke several windows in his room and one in the lobby of Juniper Hall. The student had to pay for the damage and soon afterwards moved off campus. The actual sum of damages incurred this year has been just under $150 at Juniper, and around $3 at Manzanita. Montana said that Junipers figures are always higher than Manzanitas. Theft has been a major problem in the past, but no reports of theft have been made this year. Drugs and alcohol have not been a problem either this year. Montana said that these have never been a big problem in SUSCs student housing. Alcohol is becoming a more prevalent problem Montana says they have the right to do room checks if there is probable cause. If marijuana is smelled by an R.A., he must first try to decide which room the smell is coming from, then get another opinion from a housing official. They then must knock on the door to make the inquiry. A student will normally get one warning before any action is taken against them. If R.A.s believe that a party is getting a little too wild or noisy then they must go through the same procedure. However, they do have the right to enter if no one answers the door. Oak Hall residents have the best record of all. According to Kathy Rearden, head resident adviser, the only form of vandalism that has occurred has been damage done to a pop machine in the laundry room, but the blame there can possibly be laid upon junior high school students that used to spend a lot of time there. Montana said that he has a good feeling about this year and believes that it should be a good one for students and student housing. were; we know kids are drinking beer in their rooms when we find trash cans with beer cans in them, Montana said.
