Henrys hanging in there The SUSC Theatre Arts Department sports a type of wallpaper" this year: The Utah Shakespearean Festivals new Henry V tapestry. new-ol- d R. Scott Phillips, public relations According director for the Festival, the large cloth painting was commissioned for inclusion in an exhibit centered around Henry V, the historical tragedy presented in this summers Festival. The design, taken from an illustration in an English history book, depicts clothing and artistic styles popular during Henrys life. The small boy at the pictures center is presumed to be young Henry. Shannon Scruggs, who came to SUSC as a transfer student from Amarillo Junior College and graduated in 1982 as a theatre major with a scene design emphasis, was commissioned to create the tapestry. She was brought in last May from the California Institute of the Arts, where she is pursuing her MFA, to do the work. The tapestry, done in shades of red, blue, and brown, took her five weeks, working 12 hours a day, to complete. A special hanging process gives the piece the rippled warp appearance of an actual tapestry. True tapestries are woven and embroidered, not painted, so they dont lie flat against the wall. The painting now hangs on the north wall of It will the theatre buildings exhibit remain there until the remodeling of the Great Hall is finished, at which time it will be removed to that ballroom and presented to the college as a gift from the Festival. Tim Bryson, set designer for Two Gentlemen of Verona, designed the kings exhibit. Reproductions and genuine artifacts from Henrys life were borrowed from various people and institutions for use in the display, including a set of paintings done between 1413 and 1422, the timespan Henry actually ruled England, from the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery.
