Was it magic, a session of voodoo, or a witch doctor summoning evil spirits7 Actually, the events that took place in the Thorley Recital Hall on Tuesday, Oct 11, could hardly be called a display of witchcraft It was merely the renowned hypnotist, Cliff Webb, conjuring up a few laughs from an eager SUSC audience The hypnotic state of mind allows the brain to think more vividly and imaginatively than it would under normal conditions Many people believe that under hypnosis they could be made to jump from a cliff or admit to committing a crime This is false People cannot be persuaded against their will Webbs main purpose for the session on Tuesday was to allow a few students to experience a different level of mind depth Webb first involved the group in a relaxation exercise He then suggested the audience imagine being carried by helium balloons to an island in Hawaii After drifting over the ocean and lying in soft, white sand, the participants knew this was not to be an ordinary evening Audience members most subjected to the hypnotic suggestions were asked to partcipate m more depth on stage They were taken, under hypnosis, through a series of outlandish situations Webb had them imagine everything from sitting by a smelly companion to competing in a bauty pageant Nervousness and stage fright were put aside momentarily as students were enticed to sing, dance, laugh, cry, do one armc push-upand acquire foreign accents m front of an audience, uninhibited Students on stage, as well as the viewing audience members, learned that mind control is an important par, of success Webbs philosophy is that anything can be accomplished if all are deleted He demonstrated this repeatedly as students and attitudes were put to test 1 r "i s. , i v by Lanai Greenhalgh $ $reS tr A canyon party at Woods Ranch and an appearance by hypnotist Cliff Webb highlighted last week's Mens Week activities Webb entranced the audience as he led his volunteers in dancing, resting and stiffening like boards More than 50 students enjoyed a hayride and roasted hot dogs at the canyon party V 3 s vrw$m!Ami ipywiwfi ': liii'w.. i -- v js, ,.
