Show The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, March Wyoming Men, Run the Shoiv in 'Equality State By Charles Hillmger Los Angeles Times Writer CHEYENNE In the late lfith century, Susan B. Anthony,, the suffragist, called Wyoming the first place on God's green earth which can claim to be the land of the free. - The territory had just given women the right to vote and to hold office the first time any place in the world. That w as only the beginning. Tn J870, the following year, Wyoming had the first woman justice of the peace in history. . - In 1894 it elected the first woman to state office in America. In 1910 the first Uoman legislator, and in 1924 the first woman governor in the nation. Despite this record, and alw ays has Wyoming is been a mans state. More Respect 'There is perhaps more re- spect for women in Wyoming than many other places, said Laramie Mayor Dick Weeks, but the man is the man. The women have the kids. The womans place is to raise the family in our predominately farming, ranch type of environment. Strange when one considers that this is where it all began. Wyomings leading historian, T. A. Al Larson offered perhaps the best explanation. Really A Fluke And a recent report by the Wyoming Commission on the Status of women underscored this paradox. It charged: although our state is known as the Equality State, sex discrimination is rampant. Women are sterotyped m womens occupations. Women are clustered in low paying and less rewarding jobs. Emfor ployment opportunitities women are curtailed by sexual discrimination. Larson, a bill was introduced territorial legislature to give women the right to vote and hold office. The author was a named William H. Bright who ; presided over the Senate. in he "It was really a fluke that Wyoming was the first place to give women the vote and the right to hold office, he said in an interview. "In 1869 there were only 9.000 people in the w hole territory; 7,000 were over 21. and of that number 6.000 were men and 1.000 women. In that year, according to wives of miners and camp lowers. "He sold other legislators on its passage, saying it was one way to attract w'etuen to Larson said. Sy oming, But it didn't work," said Larson, who chaired the University of Wyoming's history department for 20 years. The only women who came were wives of railroad builders. This is pretty much B Under the Law of the Equality State. "There in fact is not true equality of the sexes under and never Wyoming law miantains Miss has been, Lawson. than a man. fol- 11, 1873 mans country, much more than Impressive List "It's true women have an states with large urban reas. list of firsts in The woman's place is in the. impressive he noted, but Wyoming, they really havent been visible in the political arena in any large numbers. the Wyoming through has had far fewer women in the legislature than most other slates. Wyoming women are hypercritical about women in political office. They are more apt to find fault with a woman home.
