Some may think that the effect of home building on the economy of Greater Salt Lake rests solely with the production of new homes. This, however, Is only the beginning. New business- - is brought to the producers of nails, steel, bricks, lumber, shingles, kitchen cabinets, garbage disposals, exhaust fans, linoleum, furnaces, air conditioners, appliances, glass, paint, tile, bath tubs, gypsum board and many other products by the construction of new homes. Brings Prosperity In addition to this the new home means prosperity for the owners and workers in other lines of business. New home owners buy drapes, carpets, furniture, landscaping and barbeque r equipment for living. - A look at any of the newly developed eubdivisions reveals new hi g h w a y s , churches and schools. Huge new shopping centers have been created which make jobs for those that build them and those that will continue to work there. A study by Fortune magazine concluded that home building in the decade after Work! Builders Show Their Best Home Show Week Opens in S.L Area National Home Week, 23 Oct. 2, I an annual affair, Initiated in 1948, during which member of the Home Builders Association of Greater Salt Lake and other associations over the nation exhibit their latest model homes. The purpose of the week la to concentrate public attention on the accomplishments of the home - building Industry In meeting the housing needs of America. Donald W. Brown of Mop l Co. Is the chairman of this years Utah observance. .. The celebration was con ceived as an educational observance. It was intended to show how a high volume of new homes was produced, to Illustrate technical progress and to show the public the latest and best in convenient and comfortable ways to live. Conceived In 1948 The idea was first Sept rison-Merril- at the 1948 NAHB Chicago convention. A program of development and promotion was prepared by the NAHB and Sent out to all local' associations. The celebration was organized so It could be adapted to the particular needs of any community. It waa based on the broad thesis that It was a community celebration In which all Interested groups high as 2 million In large areas. Each metropolitan year approximately 10,000 exhibit homes go on display across the country a showing with a value of somewhere In the neighborhood of $120 million. Thousands of families use the week as an opportunity to select, a new home.
