Show 18 8 26, 1977 DESERET NEWS, THURSDAY, MAY COG supports antilitter drive OBITUARIES 1VITAL Tregeagle Salt Lake County Utah's recreation areas July "Each member of the council has been encouraged to promote cleanup efforts during that week," said Mayor Oliver P. Davis, council president. "We are interested in improving all aspects of our physical environment and applaud the Deseret News (and other sponsors) for initiating this effort," Mayor Davis said. The antilitter campaign was initially sponsored by the Utah Lions Clubs, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and the Boy Scouts. However, additional sponsors are welcome It) join the program. The Tooele County Wildlife Federation's secretary, Orrin P. Miller, said he sent campaign dates and other information to the State Wildlife Federation for distribution to all state affiliated clubs. "It is a good, worthwhile project," Miller said. Also joining as sponsors are A.M. Watanabe, environmental health specialist with the Branch of Environmental health, Utah Division of Health; Robert James Hunt, executive director, Utah Association for Retarded Citizens; and Ernest D. Mariani, president, Utah Manufacturers Association. Officials are asking citizens to take bags with them to the recreation areas, clean up the litter and pack it back out with them. Individuals and groups willing to pledge support of the July cleanup should send their names to LITTER, Deseret News, P.O. Box 1257. Salt Lake City, Utah 84110. Names will be printed in this paper. Utah court upholds forgery conviction The Utah Supreme Court Wednesday unanimously upheld the forgery conviction of Robert Louis White, who claimed there wasn't enough evidence to convict him. White also claimed Third District Court Judge Peter F. Leary abused his discretion in sentencing him to a prison term. Chief Justice A. H. Ellett wrote the opinion, saying an eyewitness testified that White was the person who gave him a forged $185 check to cash. The opinion said White denied the charges when he took the stand during his trial, but later confessed while being interviewed by officials of two rehabilitation agencies. Justice Ellett said his motive apparently was to gain sympathy from the interviewers and the judge, hoping for probation in lieu of a prison sentence. The opinion said White had a long record of offenses dating back to 1964 and had been in practically every kind of program in an attempt to rehabilitate him. He said the judge didn't abuse his discretion in sending him to prison. , ' ' 'V " CLEANUP I , 'NEST SIOE ' i Ni 14 4, xa t MJ ...J MAY 23 CL I . 1 t TO JUNE 10 - (b tt; ;4- 9 0Z EASY SIDE 7 I.- REDWOOD ROAD i rOf OCKUP ot viy TH!
