Show T( DfcSERET Canyon road action pushed By Jan Padfield Deseret News staff writer HEBER CITY Action on a controversial widening of the Provo Canyon highway was recommended Wednesday night by the Mountainlands Association of Governments. Public hearings on the proposed project will be held June 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Orem High School and June 2 at 7 : 30 p.m. in Wasatch High in Heber City. Engineers for the widening project told the Mountainlands executive council that results of environmental studies and public hearings will determine what construction should be done. The project would extend from at 800 North in Orem up Provo Canyon to the junction of 0 in Heber City. The number of lanes is the subject of controversy. Lester Abbey, an engineer for the environmental study, said the most critical portion of the project is in the lower canyon from Orem to Olmstead. The possibilities include two lanes following the existing line; three lanes, with two downhill and one uphill, or four lanes. To really solve the problem, we should have four lanes, he said. In other action, the council reviewed and approved a $500,000 widening project for Orems U-4- y" Center Street. A project widening 9th East from Center Street to KSOO North in Provo also was approved. Dr. Richard Weaver, Timpanogos mental health ditector, presented a plan for developing a personality fitness program" through radio broadcasts directly to specific interest groups. He asked $120,000 for the first year of operation. The proposal includes setting up a station on Utah Countys western mountains. Five council members were assigned to study Weavers proposal. Heber City Mayor Kent Hiatt reported a need for federal funding for his towns sewer and water system. The need for improvements is acute since leaks in the system have caused a 50 percent loss of culinary water, he said. The council approved spending of $135,000 in Environmental Protection Agency funds for sewer improvement and $20,000 in Four Comers money for water improvements. In addition, some $70,000 in Bureau of Reclamation money for an industrial park was transferred to the Heber City water needs. Council members also approved $30,000 from the Bureau of Reclamation for two parks in American Fork, as well as $100, 000 for a Provo park; $50,000 for a Payson park; $150,000 for an Orem park, and $105,000 for a Pleasant Grove city park. four-coun- NEWS, THURSDAY, MAY 26, 1977 fa J It's takeover or no funds, CAP warned Barbara Bernstein Deseret News stall writer By ty OGDEN The Ogden Area Action Program Community will lose its provisional hauling and be phased out next month if it does not accept takeover by Weber County. This warning was given Wednesday night by Morris lx'vvis, a representative of the Community Services Administration regional office in Denver, as he met with the Ogden Area CAP board to answer questions about CSAs attitude regarding designation of an agency to serve Weber County.
