Show 4B Standard-Examin- Sunday July 12 1981 er Birthright: a haven for troubled mothers-to-b- e By BECKY CAIRNS Standard-Examin- ' Sandra JV 31 er Staff was elated when she learned she was pregnant “I wanted to put it on Walter Cronk-ite- ” she said Although she and her husband of two years both wanted a baby he changed dramatically after the pregnancy was confirmed and began battering Sandra Concern for her unborn child prompted Sandra who asked that her real name not be used to leave her husband and her California home In her struggle to find help she said she encountered many organizations that Mary E Cunningham 'No understanding of successful women' t 1 ' New York (UPI) — Writing in this month’s “Working Woman” magazine Mary E Cunningham 29 says “many people have no framework for understanding a woman who sets a record in business — so they turn to the shopworn explanation that she used her sexual charms to get there” Ms Cunningham left the Bendix Corporation last October amid rumors that she had risen quickly in the company because she was romantically involved with her boss William Agee She says the media’s coverage of women in business is irresponsibility and sexist “I have heard it said that working women must avoid situations which no matter how pure can be interpreted as compromising that appearances may even be more important than reality” she says “It means not closing the door when you have to discuss a confidential business matter with a man It means not staying late to work and so on ” She says the press cannot offer in its own defense that it has no norms for people who have broken the age barrier and risen to prominence while still very young that there are “norms” — for men “Photographers at a public function who train their lens (as they did in my case) on a man and a woman when a wider angle would have included other officers from the same company are acting irresponsibly and unprofessionally” she says were unsympathetic and others which openly adovcated abortion a suggestion which angered her Sandra came to Utah without a job without friends or relatives to start a new life for herself and her baby Soon after her arrival she found emotional and physical help from Birthright a national organization dedicated to helping single and married women with problem pregancies Birthright’s philosophy is summed up in its motto: “It is the right of every pregnant woman to give birth and the right of every child to be born” “Birthright is an alternative to abortion” said Joan Morris one of the founders of the Ogden chapter which was formed last year “We are very sensitive to life” she said “Life is sacred and only the Creator has the right to give and take life” The organization is staffed by trained volunteers and is supported by private donations Mrs Morris said any woman of any age can receive a free professional pregnancy test at the Birthright office 3317 B Jefferson Most of the clients are young women from 16 to 20 years old she said Married women also use the service Mrs Morris said They may be concerned about finances or may have a more complex problem such as a situation where the husband is not the father of the child Besides professional counseling Birthright offers referrals to pro-lif- e doctors provides maternity clothes baby clothes and furniture and offers transportation housing assistance and temporary foster homes for expectant mothers The agency also makes referrals to licensed adoption agencies In Sandra’s case Birthright found her living quarters until she could find her own apartment She received maternity clothes and lists of items she will need for her baby Birthright also arranged transportation to pre-natclasses More importantly Sandra says the volunteers have been like a family to al her “It’s knowing that someone else cares about the baby” she says “I am most concerned that the baby isn’t in any way shortchanged by all this” When a welfare worker in California suggested Sandra get an abortion to solve her problems she said “I was angry to put it mildly “To me the child has been a life since the moment I knew it was there” Sandra had worked as a restaurant cook but found no one would hire her because she was pregnant She is now taking a meat cutting course so she can get a better job once her baby is born in September Jenny (not her real name) is a teenager who went to Birthright for help She had been living with her boyfriend for several months and suspected she might be pregnant Because no one in the family was working Jenny 17 said she had no money or transportation to get to a doctor She saw an advertisement for Birthright and went there for the pregnancy test When the pregnancy was confirmed the organization helped her find a doctor Before she moved back with her parents Jenny said she also planned to borrow furniture and baby clothes from Birthright “Now that I moved back home I really don’t need it” she said “But it’s nice to know there is somebody out there if you need help” Jenny said she and her boyfriend both wanted a baby and abortion was never a consideration “We both wanted it and we had planned on getting married from day one” she said “Now he has a job — he’s trying really hard We have plans for getting married after the baby’s bom” Because she has had several miscarriages Jenny says her biggest concern 'It's knowing that someone else cares about the baby am most concerned that the baby isn't shortchanged by all this to me the child has been a life since the moment I knew it was there is losing the child But the pregnancy is going well and the baby is due in Sep- about the rights of minors and their parents In addition to the volunteers Mrs Morris says many people have offered assistance to Birthright Some are willing to provide a temporary home for a woman others will give transportation or make a baby blanket Mrs Morris says she first learned of Birthright when the group made a presentation at a convention of the Utah tember “I know where I’m going now” she says “I’ve had a lot of help from a lot of people It seems like everything is going to turn out all right” nonBirthright is a Mrs organization political Morris says All counseling is confidential If a pregnancy test is positive volunteers will discuss with a woman what plans she wants to make If a woman wants an abortion Mrs Morris says the volunteers will not make referrals for the procedure but will explain the types of abortions performed in Utah “We don’t show anybody pictures of bloody fetuses’ she said “We stress the positive aspects of child bearing” s in telBirthright can assist ling their parents about their pregnancy Mrs Morris said She says the organization will not set up a doctor’s appointment for a minor before her parents know about the pregnancy “It is not our intent to take the place of the family or the church” she said adding the group is particularly cautious Mrs Morris contacted some of her friends about the organization and after a year of planning the Ogden office opened Since last September Birthright has given about 70 pregnancy tests One of the volunteers is Angie Lambert a college student who is expecting her first baby Mrs Lambert says she was concerned that abortion was becoming an easy alternative for young women Birthright’s hours are 9
