Air Force Base caused cancer and other serious illnesses in workers One witness testified that cancer was so common that workers wondered “who would be next” to contract and die of the disease Sen Orrin Hatch chairman of the Senate Labor and HuTwenty-thre- e R-Ut- ah man Resources Committee chaired the hearing which lasted nearly seven hours in the Roy High School auditorium Hatch who said one of the primary purposes of the hearing was to explore the issues surrounding the exposure of the civilian work force involved in maintenance operations at Hill AFB to toxic chemicals was joined in the questioning by Sen Jeremiah Denton The hearing was arranged so that five panels of individuals and two separate medical doctors were R-A- la interviewed and questioned Utah con- cerning the necessity for proposed mortality and morbidity studies The five panels consisted of: — First members of the American Federation of Government Employees Union Local 1592 including William M Harper president Neil B Breeden former president Lois V Howell chairwoman of the union’s chemical committee and Joseph Wally chairman of the union’s health and safety committee — Second a panel of widows whose husbands died allegedly as a result of toxic chemical contact including Mrs Nick C Chaffos of Salt Lake Mrs Myron Whitesides of Layton Mrs Joseph Antencio of g Ogden and Mrs Robert B of Murray — The third panel consisted of workers or former workers who have contracted cancer including Terrance Anderson of West Jordan Kent Clayton of Sunset and Jesse Fallows of Roy A fourth panel member Ronald Trussell of Morgan was scheduled to testify but because of his illness had been hospitalized His wife appeared on the panel and tearfully read his prepared statement — The fourth panel was composed of individuals who have con Lim-ber- Jr and his counterparts from Canada Mexico and Venezuela agreed Saturday that their nations should work together to stimulate the economy of the Caribbean region joint communique issued after meeting called for “more comprehensive efforts by countries cooperating with the region taking into account the different approaches and development stages of these countries” The ministers agreed to begin immediate talks with the governments of other nations in Central America and the Caribbean as well as with industrial nations elsewhere and with international Health and Dr Robert InSpirtas of the National Cancerbetstitute appeared separately ween the fourth and fifth panels Union officials claim as did numerous other witnesses that the possibility that as many as 150 individuals have died of cancer and that at least 1200 others have contracted serious illness through exposure to toxic chemicals points directly to the need for the two studies “I do not place the blame for the past health problems at Hill AFB at any single or all of the Hill AFB managers” Breeden said speaking on behalf of the union “These individuals were not aware of the danger of the chemicals used and as their sole function was to meet production deadlines they only accomplished their job “I do find fault with vendors and manufacturers who did not properly label dangerous chemicals and a John Shupe reed about the need for a mortality study which examines the cause of death in individuals they questioned the proposed morbitity study which would examine the causes or possible causes of specific illnesses in living individuals Furtado told Htch during questioning that the Air Force would be willing to participate in a mortality study but “not support it supply
